Dear Families,
This past Wednesday, I attended the wake of a Malden Catholic alum, Class of 1953. He was a friend of the School for many years and had sent several of his sons to MC, the most recent graduating in 1985, the year before I arrived. On the receiving line I was greeted by a daughter of the deceased. She recognized me right away because two of her sons had graduated from MC about 12 years ago. (They were elsewhere in the parlor, and we chatted later.) She launched into how great an MC experience her sons had, and she went further to say that her Dad loved Malden Catholic, that “it had saved his life”! It was touching that at such an emotion-charged time in a family journey, Malden Catholic would hold a cherished place in their hearts.
Moments before, while I was waiting in line, a woman behind me tapped my shoulder, said she recognized me, introduced herself and said her two boys had attended MC 15 years ago. She had fond memories and remarked how her sons, doing well, had a great foundation at MC. Before leaving, I had two more “MC encounters,” one with the Dad of a freshman I currently teach, who had shared with him that she was “re-creating herself” at MC – a fascinating thought! And more true, probably, than she realizes at this time! The other conversation, a longer one, was with the son of the deceased. He recalled playing soccer in the 1980s, coached by Brother Dan Cremin, with whom he had just been speaking. He talked about how influential MC had been in his life and ended by saying, “Sometimes you may not see it when you’re there, but years later, you realize how important the experience was.”
It reminded me of something we had just been talking about in Theology class, the beautiful post-Easter Scriptural passage about the Risen Jesus meeting two disciples on the road to Emmaus. Dejected and disillusioned, they were leaving Jerusalem, having witnessed several days before the cruel and humiliating death of the person they had called “messiah.” That very person was walking the 7-mile road with them, “opening the Scriptures” to them in a way that made their hearts burn. But they did not recognize him as the Risen Lord until later that night when they “saw” Him in “the breaking of the bread.” The story, among many other things, is a classic example of “seeing” – of experiencing -- but not perceiving, not understanding. The disciples did not recognize initially the reality before them.
Sometimes understanding unfolds only over time. In a few weeks we will be parting company with our Class of 2024. We have walked a 4-year road with them. I’m sure that for our 188 seniors there are 188 unique perceptions of their MC experience. Time will tell how their understandings evolve. This past Friday seniors joined in a prayer ceremony commissioning them for the Christian Service projects that many will soon begin. Recalling Jesus’ commissioning of his apostles after his resurrection, “Go forth and teach all nations!” the service ended with an anointing of each student’s hand, with the invitation “Serve gladly in Jesus’ name.” We hope they do! May our graduates -- and each of us -- enjoy an ever-deepening understanding of the blessings in our midst and of the Risen Lord who walks with us!
Sincerely,
Brother Thomas Puccio, C.F.X., Ed.D., H’18
