Your Prenatal Wellness Begins Here

Hello,

We hope you are welcoming May sunlight and blooms as much as we are!

At InnerMovement, we are blessed during the spring/summer months as our waiting room fills with expectant mothers. And new babies being born into our Chiropractic family peaks by summers end. We LOVE it!

Pregnancy is a period of time when the body can benefit greatly and uniquely from chiropractic care. As a practitioner, I find this population so fulfilling to work with due to the magnitude of positive impact it can have on a mother at this special time, and secondarily for the baby as well.

What an honor to help mothers experience a pain free pregnancy and to assist BOTH mom and baby in an easier, natural labor and delivery.

In this newsletter we have answered the most common questions we hear regarding the types of Prenatal services we offer at InnerMovement. Such as, 1) "What are the reasons to seek Chiropractic care during pregnancy?" 2)"What does an adjustment look like during pregnancy?" or 3)"Why is it important to keep the pelvis moving properly during pregnancy?"

These are great teaching moments. Times for IMW prenatal staff and I to put our many years of additional training in prenatal and pediatric education to use.

We ask that you please Share this newsletter with your pregnant friends and family or those expecting to get pregnant so that they know there are safe and natural options for them during this precious time.

We really enjoy treating ALL of our patients but working with Prenatal patients has its own special reward-adorable babies who come visit afterward!

We hope you also enjoy the little one's you meet in our waiting room :) Read on to learn more about Prenatal and Pediatric Chiropractic Care.

If you are pregnant and considering chiropractic care, please call our office to schedule an appointment!

Until your 'Mommy Monday' prenatal visit :),

 Pain during Pregnancy

During pregnancy hormonal changes increase the flexibility of the body’s ligaments in order to prepare the body to birth the baby. If the ligaments become too flexible, a woman might experience ligament and/or joint pain (ACOG, 2021). Any ligament and or joint can be affected especially those found in the pelvis, back, and even wrists. Prenatal acupuncture and food therapy can help with:

  • overall ligament health
  • decrease back pain
  • help soften cervix in preparation for dilation during child birth
  • stress incontinence

You have Questions?

We have answers...

What are the reasons to seek Chiropractic care during pregnancy?

1) Pain relief. As the body adjusts to the shifting biomechanics of carrying the weight of the baby and the hormone relaxin creates laxity in the joints, aches and pains can occur. Often this comes in the form of low back pain, sciatica, and pubic bone pain. Other times it can exacerbate complaints of upper back or neck pain, especially if you are working on a computer or still breastfeeding/lifting/carrying other children. Studies show that 84% of pregnant women get relief from low back pain with chiropractic care, and that it decreases the likelihood of experiencing “back labor”.

2)  Preparing the pelvis for birth. The mother’s pelvis is designed to be quite mobile during childbirth, and expands in various directions as the baby moves down the birth canal. Oftentimes we can acquire motion restrictions between the bones of the pelvis - the low back, sciatic and pubic bone pain can all be symptoms of restriction in the pelvis, but it often takes quite a bit of irritation of those tissues to become symptomatic, so it is a good idea to have your pelvic motion patterns assessed even if you are not having pain yet. This usually occurs due to repetitive movements that we do asymmetrically, such as driving, shifting our weight to one leg when standing, carrying small children on one hip, etc.

What does an adjustment look like during pregnancy?

The Webster Technique is what I use to evaluate and adjust during pregnancy. The treatment table in the office has a leaf which opens up so you can lay face down safely and comfortably. The adjustments are gentle and specific. The pertinent soft tissues will also be addressed with gentle myofascial release techniques. Adjustments to the neck and upper back, if indicated, would be the same as you would receive when not pregnant, and as always can be modified to your comfort level. Everything will be explained thoroughly, and your concerns will always be heard.

*Dr Heidi is certified in the Webster technique.

Why is it so important to keep the pelvis moving properly during pregnancy & birth?

  • The major ligaments that attach to the uterus attach to the bones of the pelvis. If there is uneven tension in those ligaments it can distort the uterine space, leading to suboptimal baby positioning.

  • A review of statistics shows that women who receive chiropractic care throughout pregnancy have 25% shorter labor times, on average. A well-balanced pelvis allows the baby to descend through the birth canal with greater ease and comfort. This is truly a benefit for both mama and baby.

Prenatal Partnerships

We take great efforts to offer the BEST care to our prenatal and postnatal patients. We use specialized equipment for our Chiropractic care to allow mom to lay face down and receive non-force pelvic, hip and low back adjustments. And we refer to our Acupuncturist for Labor induction if mom is past her due date.

We work with many doula's, midwives, birth centers and OB/GYN's in the area assisting them in treating pregnant patients who are experiencing pain but cannot resort to pain medications during pregnancy.
