Letter From the Director

Dear friends,

As summer draws closer, we look forward to celebrating Boston University Tanglewood Institute's 50th Anniversary Season--a monumental moment in our history. We'll keep you informed monthly this spring as plans develop. For now, here are some highlights.

On Saturday, August 6, 2016, BUTI will present a special 50th Anniversary Concert in Ozawa Hall at Tanglewood, celebrating the program's legacy while looking toward its future. Other events and activities during the day will include tours of the 45 West Street campus, a piano recital in the West Street Theatre, and a post-concert reception on Tanglewood grounds. We even have an invitation to Vocal Program alumni to join in on a special performance in Ozawa Hall.

We would love you to join us for a day of music-making, memories, and renewed connections to the magic of Tanglewood and the BUTI community, of which you all are an incredibly important part. Learn more about the activities, tickets, and how you can be a part.

The National Endowment for the Arts shares a 50th Anniversary with BUTI and recently announced awards totaling more than $27.6 million in its first funding round of fiscal year 2016, including an Art Works award of $40,000 to support BUTI's 2016 Young Artists Orchestra and Wind Ensemble.

NEA Chairman Jane Chu said, "The arts are part of our everyday lives - no matter who you are or where you live - they have the power to transform individuals, spark economic vibrancy in communities, and transcend the boundaries across diverse sectors of society. Supporting projects like the one from Boston University Tanglewood Institute offers more opportunities to engage in the arts every day."

Alumni News

Our congratulations this Spring goes to two Young Artists Vocal Program alumni, mezzo-soprano Emily D'Angelo (BUTI '12) and baritone Sean Michael Plumb (BUTI '09), who were winners in the 2016 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. Both performed at the Grand Finals Concert, hosted by Deborah Voigt, on Sunday, March 13, 2016 on the Metropolitan Opera stage and received cash prizes of $15,000 each.

And for something completely different, check out what alumni Yuga Cohler (BUTI '06) and Stephen Feigenbaum (BUTI '05, '06 and '07) are cooking up in LA with the Young Musicians Foundation.

Did you know that BUTI tuition only covers half of the program's total expense? Each year, we need to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for scholarships and we rely on support from individuals like you to reach this goal.

On April 6, 2016, BU Giving Day, help make it possible for the next generation of BUTI students to spend a summer at Tanglewood.
