This Earth Day, we celebrated the beauty of our planet by showcasing postcards featuring our parks within Precinct 2, inviting everyone to reconnect with nature and enjoy the greenery and breathtaking views. We also thank our dedicated staff of Precinct 2 for their efforts in maintaining our parks clean and helping us create a more sustainable precinct.

This month we kicked off our new Be a Tourist series where you will have a chance to join us on a journey to explore Precinct 2, a place for everyone to play! In these series, we will feature places and activities that you and your family enjoy in our precinct!

To start the series, in recognition of April as Autism Awareness Month, we highlighted four exciting, sensory-friendly activities suitable for people of all abilities. This all falls under our Revive2Thrive initiative to make Precinct a place to live, work, and play!

Project Lifesaver:

As of 2023, Project Lifesaver remains vital to our public safety initiatives, with 118 actively enrolled individuals. This proactive program specializes in helping individuals with Autism, Alzheimer's, Down Syndrome, and related disorders who may wander from safe locations and require aid in returning to safety. Project Guardian:

The Harris County Sheriff's Office has an initiative called Project Guardian, where caregivers can provide vital information to assist deputies in safely and effectively responding to individuals with special needs. Currently, the program has over 300 registered individuals, with ongoing monthly expansions highlighting its critical role in protecting vulnerable members of our community.

Chief's Meeting:

Commissioner Garcia was invited to speak to a group of area Chiefs of Police from across agencies that serve areas within Harris County. Commissioner detailed all the various recent investments and measures taken to improve public safety such as the Violent Persons Warrant Task Force, additional funds for intake at the jail, investments on the backlog, ARPA DV initiatives, CPTED/Nuisance Abatement and the $100M LE infrastructure and much more. The audience of dozens of Chiefs appreciated the opportunity for the open dialogue with the Commissioner.

Earth Day & Solar for All : In honor of Earth Day, Commissioner Garcia passed a resolution recognizing Earth Day and reminding us of our duty to protect the environment and advocate for sustainable practices. Harris County has taken proactive measures to drive positive change and dedication to improving the quality of life for residents through initiatives. We also celebrated Harris County being selected as a "Solar for All" grant recipient. Solar for all was included in the Inflation Reduction Act as part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s Investing in America agenda. It aims to expand the number of low-income and disadvantaged communities to access affordable, resilient, and clean solar energy. It will help create well-paid union jobs and make power bills for working families more affordable.

Resolutions

Honoring the life of Jarvon Coles : Commissioner Garcia introduced a resolution to commemorate the life of Jarvon Coles, a high school senior tragically killed outside a house party in Humble. Jarvon, a student recognized for his academic excellence and athletic talents, was known for his friendliness and caring nature; he supported his teammates and friends, who affectionately nicknamed him "Veezy." His family and friends will remember Jarvon.

Theodesia Drummer, and Dale Bates: Commissioner Garcia passed a resolution recognizing Precinct 2 staff, Theodesia Drummer and Dale Bates, for their life-saving efforts in saving a Precinct 2 resident with a possible cardiac arrest while playing pickleball. The two staff members performed CPR and applied an automated external defibrillator until emergency services arrived. Harris County Precinct 2 makes extensive efforts to ensure that its employees are CPR-trained to assist better and help the community they serve.
