This is a wholly solid cristalino — particularly given its very approachable price tag. The nose is mild but offers notes of fresh agave mixed with caramel and a touch of vanilla. Hints of lemon-lime nod at sharper citrus notes, but on the whole the aromatics are entirely restrained — which is appropriate for a reposado-based cristalino.

There’s considerably more exuberance on the palate, where vanilla and chocolate are immediately evident, tempered by a lashing of peppery agave. These elements both build with time in glass, giving the experience something of a Mexican chocolate character, developing a richer construction that might be more typical of an anejo-based tequila. Some dark black fruit emerges over time, with an echo of herbal agave to offset the sweetness, balancing out the finish.

A lovely adventure from start to end, it’s a decidedly solid, drinkable, and versatile example of the style — not too sweet, not blown out by wood.

The blend is shaped by terroir and is composed of the best batches of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon rooted in the oldest viticulture soil in the world made up of decomposed granite on the lower slopes of the Helderberg Mountain. The vineyards enjoyed the refreshingly cool breezes from False Bay (Atlantic Ocean) during the day and cool air mountain air at night, resulting in even ripening of the berries and good, natural acidity.

According to vintner Jasper Raats, both the name and the label illustrate Longridge’s biodynamic way of farming. During the winemaking process, Raats and fellow wine maker Hendrien De Munck followed their usual natural, organic approach.  “The vineyards are meticulously cared for by hand and the crop is reduced to ensure maximum quality.  This wine is made naturally by not making use of any commercial yeast, enzymes or fining agents. It is further not filtered or cold stabilized and may therefore in time show harmless sediment,” says Raats.  

Named after the orbital occurrence when the earth, moon and stars align in their path around the sun, the Ekliptika was matured in a combination of new and mature French oak barrels for 24 months and with proper cellaring, this wine will improve and continue to reward over the next 6-8 years.

Dark and concentrated in color, this wine greets you on the nose with aromas of ripe red fruits, plums and pencil shavings which follow through onto the palate with chewy black cherries, sweet spices and tannins on the mid palate and a lingering umami finish! A MUST for ANY wine LOVER!!

When tasting this wine, we knew it was something special! We featured it at the Morton Arboretum Spring Tasting along with 119 other wines. It was the NUMBER 1 seller hands down. The next best seller was a Lime Ginger Moscato! You've got to try to believe. This is a hidden gem coming from a famed Austrian winery, that let's face it - LOVES to experiment and to say the least.....it's a home run with us!!

From the Winery -

"Our project wines are not based on typical regional taste profiles or conventional winemaking methods. In most cases, it starts with an idea, which is then realised on a small scale by micro-vinification of just a few hundred bottles. Not all of these experimental wines make it into the bottle. We only bottle the projects that make us proud.

Our aging vessels range from granite to ceramic eggs or various amphorae. Stylistically, there are no taboos. Sulphur free wines? Fortified Wines? Wines made from dried grapes? White wine from red grapes? Or red wines from intracellular fermentation? - We have successfully implemented all of these styles!

Some wines were received so well that we decided to permanently incorporate them into our wine range. These are our heartfelt projects. The conclusions we draw from these project experiences are consistently incorporated into our quality pyramid."
