A PRAYER FOR THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE MAUI FIRES

My dear beloved Siblings in Christ Jesus:

On this the first anniversary of the devastating Maui fires, we still pray the words of Psalm 130 from our very core:

I cry out to you from the depths, Lord—

my Lord, listen to my voice!

  Let your ears pay close attention to my request for mercy!

If you kept track of sins, Lord—

  my Lord, who would stand a chance?

But forgiveness is with you—

  that’s why you are honored.

I hope, Lord.

My whole being hopes,

  and I wait for God’s promise.

My whole being waits for my Lord—

  more than the night watch waits for morning;

  yes, more than the night watch waits for morning!

Israel, wait for the Lord!

  Because faithful love is with the Lord;

  because great redemption is with our God!

He is the one who will redeem Israel

  from all its sin.

The recovery is slow and grief still palpable on Maui. Life will never be the same, but as a people we want “the whole world see and know that things which were cast down are being raised up, and things which had grown old are being made new” (from “The Solemn Collects in the Book of Common Prayer Good Friday liturgy on page 280).

Let us pray:

God of steadfast love, who led your people through the wilderness: Be with us as we remember the Maui fires and those still impacted by the destruction and the ongoing disruption of life. By your grace, lead us in the path of new life, in the company of your saints and angels; through Jesus Christ, the Savior and Redeemer of the world. Amen.

Your Brother in Christ Jesus,

+Bob
