LET'S TALK ABOUT CARS!

Let’s talk, read and sing about CARS! How much time do you spend with your child in transport? For many of us, it’s part of our daily routine, making it a great opportunity to talk, read and sing together! As you go by the park or store, you can say things like, “That’s where we played last weekend,” or “There’s the grocery store where we buy healthy foods.”

For more ideas on how to talk, read, and sing together visit: TALKING IS TEACHING

HEALTHY FOOD

Cooking Matters Recipe:

HOMEMADE CORN TORTILLA CHIPS

15 Minutes 12 Servings

Together make a snack to go! Homemade tortilla chips are easy and quick to make. Ask you little one to arrange the tortilla triangles on the baking sheet. Talk about shapes: What shape was the tortilla before cutting? What shape did we cut them into?

Ingredients:

8 (6-inch) corn tortillas

Non-stick cooking spray

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F.
  2. Cut each corn tortilla into six triangles.
  3. Coat a baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray.
  4. Place tortilla slices on baking sheet. Lightly spray the chips with nonstick cooking spray to prevent burning.
  5. Bake until golden brown and crispy, about 8-10 minutes.

AT HOME STEAM ACTIVITIES

BEDTIME MATH

Parents know to read to their kids at night, but what about math? Our goal is simple: to make math a fun part of kids’ everyday lives, as beloved as the bedtime story.

Bedtime Math sends parents a fun, new math problem every day, on everything from electric eels to chocolate chips to flamingoes. Targeted for kids ages 3-9, it begins with a short, fun set-up story, followed by three math problems at three levels of challenge.

THINGS THAT GO

PBS Parents

Planes, trains, cars, trucks, and spaceships capture our imagination — helping us think about neighborhoods, communities, states, countries, and worlds beyond our own. When a child picks up a transportation toy, they have the opportunity to pretend they are anywhere they want to be. And this on-the-go play is perfect for helping children think like a scientist — discovering physical science concepts like motion and forces, gravity, and friction.

CARING FOR KIDS: MANAGING SCREEN TIME

University of Michigan Human Resources

"Recognizing benefits and risks as well as seeking strategies for developing healthy limits can help parents and caregivers of children implement intentional practices,” says Christine Snyder, Director of Child and Family Care. “One effective approach is to start early by removing digital media from shared living and play spaces for very young children. By minimizing the presence of screens in the environment, you encourage alternative forms of play, social interaction, and exploration, which are crucial for their overall development.”
