Week 7: Electrifying the Future: A Closer

Look at Beneficial Electrification

Beneficial Electrification

Beneficial electrification refers to the practice of replacing direct fossil fuel use (such as propane, heating oil, or gasoline) with electricity in a way that reduces overall emissions and energy costs. By transitioning to electric alternatives, we can achieve several benefits:

  1. Environmental Impact: Beneficial electrification helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions. When we replace fossil fuels with electricity, we contribute to a cleaner energy system and mitigate climate change.
  2. Energy Efficiency: Electric technologies are becoming more efficient, making them a viable alternative to fossil fuels. For instance, electric vehicles (EVs) are increasingly popular due to advancements in battery technology and charging infrastructure.
  3. Cost Savings: In many cases, using electricity can be more cost-effective than relying on fossil fuels. As renewable energy sources become more accessible, the cost of electricity continues to decrease.
  4. Grid Decarbonization: Beneficial electrification contributes to greening the electric grid. As more consumers adopt electric technologies, the overall carbon intensity of the grid decreases.
  5. Strategic Planning: Utility companies and policymakers need to anticipate changes in technology, energy costs, and electricity fuel mix.

Charge your Electric Vehicle the Energy Wise Way!

The Electric Vehicle Program called the EV24 is MVEC's 24-hour, Time-of-Use electric vehicle charging program. With rates that vary to reflect power costs and demand, you have plenty of hours to charge overnight at the best rate but still have charging availability during the day at varying rates.
