Congratulations to our 2023 Hunger-Relief Champions!

Launched in 2008, the Hunger-Relief Champion award recognizes partners who demonstrate outstanding leadership and commitment in our mission to end hunger together. Each have played a critical role in our ability to serve our neighbors facing hunger across North Dakota and Clay County, Minn.

This annual award is also our highest honor, and we are thrilled to recognize Bjorn Solberg of Hugh’s Gardens LLC, David Shultz of Shultz + Associates Architects, Bremer Bank and Amy Riccio of Moorhead Area Public Schools as this year's winners!

100 Food banks convene for Feeding America 'Food Bank Fly-In'

The Great Plains Food Bank was honored to be among 100 hunger-relief organizations that traveled to Washington D.C. in March as part of the Feeding America Food Bank Fly-In.

Thanks to Senator John Hoeven, Senator Kevin Cramer and Congressman Kelly Armstrong, who each took time to meet with our contingent to discuss the needs and struggles of North Dakotans facing food insecurity.

Addressed every five years, the federal Farm Bill provides funding for critical food programs such as the SNAP and The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP). These programs, alongside a strong Farm Bill, help bridge the food gap for thousands of children, seniors and families across N.D.

Stories of Hope: Jordon

Jordon likes his full-time job. He enjoys living in a small North Dakota town. But the single dad of two kids struggles financially. “I live paycheck to paycheck,” he said. “It’s hard to get ahead.”

When it comes to income, the family of three falls into the murky middle. Jordon makes too much money for the family to qualify for any state or federal programs that might provide help with food, health care or childcare expenses.

His income isn’t high enough, however, to provide a comfortable cushion for the unexpected. And the unexpected is a given with two young children, ages 7 and 6. Sometimes Jordon will visit a local food pantry to help stretch the family’s budget. He recently drove through a mobile food pantry event and picked up food items like oranges and potatoes and frozen meat over his work break.

He tries to make balanced, nutritious meals for his children, but they are growing and eating a lot more than they used to. Hungry kids equal a bigger food bill in his world. “They are little people with big appetites.”

The groceries he received at the mobile food pantry event allowed him to save money for upcoming back-to-school expenses. “It certainly can be frustrating to not have a lot of extra money, but we’re not destitute,” he said. “Still, every little bit helps.”

Annual Report: 2023 By the Numbers

Last year, 156,479 children, older adults, and families turned to the Great Plains Food Bank and our network of feeding programs for food assistance.

That’s one in five individuals and one in three children across North Dakota turning to us because they were unsure where their next meal was coming from. Despite food donations decreasing to levels not seen since 2016, we were able to supply them with nearly 11.2 million meals.

We were only able to meet the increased demand because of you. Thank you
