Based in Esmeraldas, a town on the Pacific coast in the north of Ecuador, and named after a river that flows just over the border in Colombia,  Rio Mira rework and revitalise the music of the slaves who were brought over from Africa, some of whom escaped to find shelter in the region. The region’s music has a unique style that has been granted cultural heritage status by Unesco, but there is nothing quaint or old-fashioned about this intriguing and enchanting band. Their distinctive sound is dominated by two marimbas – a xylophone-like instrument that has its roots in Africa – matched against drums and shakers, along with impressive call-and-response vocals and harmonies. The result is a set that ranges from Latin dance songs driven on by the slinky, rhythmic marimbas, to Aguacerito, an exquisite a cappella piece with a haunting melody based around some impressively high notes.

Written and directed by Faraut and narrated by Mathieu Amalric, JOHN MCENROE: IN THE REALM OF PERFECTION revisits the rich bounty of 16-mm-shot footage of the left-handed tennis star John McEnroe, at the time the world’s top-ranked player, as he competes in the French Open at Paris’s Roland Garros Stadium in 1984. Close-ups and slow motion sequences of McEnroe competing, as well as instances of his notorious temper tantrums, highlight a ”man who played on the edge of his senses.” Far from a traditional documentary, Faraut probes the archival film to unpack both McEnroe’s attention to the sport and the footage itself, creating a lively and immersive look at a driven athlete, a study on the sport of tennis and the human body and movement, and finally how these all intersect with cinema itself.
Emmy Award winning Tonight Show Comedian Mike Dugan’s “Men Fake Foreplay” is a hilarious exploration of the trials and errors encountered on the road to becoming a man in a ‘boys-will-be-boys’ world. What begins as a naive attempt to "figure out women" quickly shifts into a humorous and insightful tour of the male psyche and the cultural influences that shape a man’s character. Based on his book, “Men Fake Foreplay
and Other Lies That Are True”, Dugan’s show takes unflinching comedic aim at men's experiences with responsibility, trust, feelings, intimacy, commitment, role models, dating , marriage, lying, cheating, divorce, fantasizing, blaming, dancing, and, especially, their relationships with women. Mike’s long career of comedy writing and performing provides a unique and socially conscious take on these topics that has consistently elicited responses describing the show as “hilarious, important, and necessary”. Mike Dugan has toured extensively throughout America, headlining comedy clubs and appearing as an opening act for musical artists such as Roy Orbison, Ricki Lee Jones, Chuck Berry, Harry Belafonte, John Hyatt and Shawn Colvin. He received his Emmy Award for his writing on HBO’s Dennis Miller Live, and was also nominated for Cable Ace and Writers Guild of America Awards. Dugan has made over seventy national television appearances, and has the distinction of being one of only a handful of stand ups to have performed on the Tonight Show with both Johnny Carson and Jay Leno.

Carrying all they own on their backs, the Penan People of Borneo are one of the last remaining hunter-gatherer peoples in existence that still live a nomadic life – a way of being that predates the dawn of agriculture and the domestication of plants and animals for food. Their word Tawai expresses a feeling for the land that is their home, yet has no equivalent in the dominant languages of today. Might Tawai be an expression of something that we no longer feel? This poetic film follows Bruce Parry (of BBC’s Tribe, Amazon and Arctic), on his journey of exploration, from the forests of Borneo to the Indian subcontinent, from deep in the Amazon to the Isle of Skye, investigating what has happened to humankind since we stopped roaming and began to settle, since we stopped flowing with nature and began to shape it to our own needs. This film is offered as part of Hopewell Theater's ongoing The Art of Living Well series featuring inspiring films, speakers and interactive discussions exploring ways of cultivating serenity, meaning and a deeper connection to one’s self and the world.

Crybaby Matinee: MARCH OF THE PENGUINS
March of the Penguins is a 2005 French feature-length nature documentary directed and co-written by Luc Jacquet, and co-produced by Bonne Pioche and the National Geographic Society. The documentary depicts the yearly journey of the emperor penguins of Antarctica. At the end of each Antarctic summer, the emperor penguins of the South Pole journey to their traditional breeding grounds in a fascinating mating ritual. The journey across frozen tundra proves to be the simplest part of the ritual, as after the egg is hatched, the female must delicately transfer it to the male and make her way back to the distant sea to nourish herself and bring back food to her newborn chick. The documentary won the 2006 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. Tickets for family matinees are $6. Thursday, November 15 at 11 am!

Join us for an evening featuring some of the most hilarious and moving storytellers on stage. With a rotating cast of storytellers, the show is always fresh. Audience members can also claim a spot in the show and share a "two-minute tale" at the open-mic at the end of each show, for up to six audience members. Hosted by Joey Novick, November's installment will feature storytellers Jamie Brickhouse, Rhonda Hansome, Nick Kupsey, Sharon Spell, Gail Thomas, and Michael Schwartz.

The Liars Show
Call it an unreality show. Since the summer of 2006, The Liar Show has taken the art of deception to theaters, cabarets and cultural centers around the U.S. and Canada and was called “A Winner” (The Scotsman) and received 4 Stars during a month-long run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. At each show, four performers tell short personal stories, but listen carefully, because one of these people is making it all up. Interrogate the cast and expose the Liar to win an unbelievable T-shirt.
