Creeping Speedwell
Veronica peduncularis 'Georgia Blue' (Speedwell)
Veronica peduncularis 'Georgia Blue' (Speedwell) is a new perennial for us this year. It comes in handy as a blooming evergreen filler. The new growth emerges in spring tinged in red and the small true-blue flowers are 4 petaled with tiny white centers and bloom in spring. There's a possible re-bloom in fall, especially if sheared back after the first flush.  The foliage turns bronze when the weather turns cold and remains through winter.
Plant in full sun to partial shade in moist, well-drained soil.  They look great tucked into rock gardens, along stone walkways and combined with smaller growing spring bulbs like Crocus or Tete-a-tete Narcissus.

Native to Ukraine and Asia, hardy zone 6-9.
Aristocrat Pear
What's so great about it anyway...?

Aristocrat Pear
Aristocrat Pear 6-7 " - smaller sizes available
Pyrus calleryana is sometimes shied away from for getting a bad rap due to the congested branching habit which can cause breakage under the weight of snow and ice. Cultivars such as 'Aristocrat' are improved selections made to address this issue. It's a nice choice for lining driveways and as a street tree, but also for the home landscape as it has interest for more than one season. Take a look at some of its finer points:
  • Symmetrical, oval to pyramidal in shape
  • Has more horizontal branching and wider crotch angles than other varieties
  • 25-35' high x 20-25' wide
  • Flowers pure white early-mid spring before leaves emerge
  • Glossy rounded leaves have a slightly wavy edge
  • Deep yellow to red fall color
  • Thornless
  • Fast grower
  • Adaptable to different soil types
  • Plant in full sun - tolerates dry soil once established
  • Low maintenance - prune if necessary in winter or early spring
Good to know: We also carry 'Capital', 'Cleveland Select', 'Redspire' and 'Trinity'. Call for availability and pricing.

Ruby Slippers Oakleaf Hydrangea

'Ruby Slippers' is a cross between Hydrangea quercifolia 'Snow Queen' and 'Pee Wee'. It's a compact form that will grow only 3-4' high x 3-5' wide. They have large white flowers that mature quickly to ruby red, and the fall foliage is striking! It's a great plant for the shrub border adding season-long texture, early summer flowers and fall color!  Available in 3 gal. containers.

For an added fall boost combine with Itea virginica 'Little Henry' (Virginia Sweetspire). It's a great underused shrub that has the same compact growth habit as Ruby Slippers and leaves that also turn bright red in fall - pairing nicely with the purplish-red of the Oakleaf. An added plus - the flowers of Itea fade just as the Oakleafs are starting! Available in 3 gal. containers.

Salix nigra
Black Willow
Black Willow is a native Willow found throughout the northeast, and extensively throughout the U.S. It's a fast growing tree with an open crown getting about 45-50' tall. They make good shade trees but are primarily used for remediation as they thrive in poorly drained soil, along ponds, streams and wetlands. The narrow 5" long leaves leaf out early and are some of the last to drop in fall after turning a golden yellow. It's happiest planted in full sun in moist soil making it a great choice for rain gardens. 4-5' plants are available in 2 gallon containers.

Interesting to know: It provides food in the form of buds and catkins early spring for both birds and pollinators.   Read more
