Something to Cluck About

Raising chickens, once a necessity for homeowners, is gaining new popularity in both urban and rural settings.  No, you do not need a rooster in order to get chicken eggs so the neighbors will not be bothered with early morning crowing.

The top reasons to have backyard chickens are:

Quality:  You will have naturally fresh eggs

Nutrition:  Free range chickens have healthier, more complex diets resulting in more nutrient rich eggs.

Self reliance: You will know the joy of a 'dairy case' in your own backyard

Less garbage:  Chickens eat fruit rinds and peelings and will reduce the size of your garbage bag

Pest Control: Less slugs and grubs

Fertilizer: You will have your own supply.

Entertainment: Chickens have personality and are fun to be around

Finally:  You might have enough eggs to master the art of crme brulee.

Please share your ideas and questions with us as we keep you "down to earth, up to date, and on the air".

 Tip of the Week

Water and Waste Not

For summer months you'll want to water your plants thoroughly and deeply each time and to allow the soil dry out between watering. Deep watering will allow the plant's roots to grow deeper, where they are less likely to dry out. Light, surface watering actually wastes water, because the water never actually reaches the root zone of the plant, and the moisture rapidly evaporates from the top inch of soil.

Did You Know?

 Ripe
As usually understood a fruit is ripe when it is ready to eat.  Properly, however, ripe signifies that the fruit has matured to the point where its seeds are ready for germination.

Sorus
The collection of spore cases under or in which are the spores of ferns.  The sori usually occur on the under side of fern fronds, and resemble small fruiting bodies, hence sometimes called (incorrectly) fruit dots.

Eye
A bud on a cutting, or a bud on a tuber, as the eyes on a potato.  Eye is also very commonly applied to the differently colored center of a flower, very conspicuous in some pinks, forget-me-nots, and in Hibiscus oculiroseus, which has a white flower with a conspicuous red eye in the center.  May garden flowers have them.

Tips from the coop

egg wipes chicken

Keep your chickens cool in the heat of summer.  Provide cool water, circulate the air in the coop, and provide shade outside the chicken coop.  An ice-cold treat like some frozen peas would make a fine desert and provide hydration while cooling them down.  Don't forget to wipe the eggs you gather with Egg Wipes!

  Swiss chard 'Bright Lights'
Bright Lights

Swiss chard is a vegetable chameleon. It can serve as an ornamental plant, a fresh leaf salad choice, or a sauteed green. The colorful rib can also be used in place of celery on a tray of crudites. Swiss chard belongs to the beet family, Chenopodiaceae. Unlike lettuce and spinach, it does not bolt in the heat of the summer but just keeps on going from spring through late fall. If you don't have any swiss chard in your garden, you can plant some right now or even just three weeks before the last frost for a fall harvest. If you choose to plant one of the brightly colored varieties available in seed packs, you can re-pot some of the reds, oranges or yellows in your containers for a fall display.

Swiss chard grows in average garden soil with a 6.0 to 7.0 pH range. The addition of compost laced with Mother Nature's All-Purpose Plant Cuisine fertilizer will ensure healthy, strong, vigorous plants and a long harvest.  Swiss chard is delicious and nutritious so start some now in the garden or a container.

Something to Chew On

Green Onions

Also called spring onions, stone leeks and scallions, these immature onions have small bulbs, long green stalks and are entirely edible. Green onions have a mild, onion flavor. While green onions have a tiny bulb, true scallions are actually even younger and have no bulb at all.

Grown worldwide, onions have been consumed since prehistoric times and most likely before recorded history. When the ancient pyramids were built, food historians claim onions were fed to the workers. Researchers say onions were found in ancient Egyptian tombs and painted on the walls of the pyramids.
