Greetings
After numerous calls and emails, to which we thank you, let us help to clarify a couple of issues.
~The Garden Guys weekly Plant of the Week e-Newsletter is the sole property of Garden Guys and is not affiliated in any way with 96.9 WTKK or Greater Media.
~Although the Garden Guys can no longer be heard 'live' on Sunday mornings, we can be heard 'live' every Friday from 3:00 - 4:00 PM EST (see below), or whenever you wish, thanks to the conveniences of modern technology.
While change can often be difficult it does offer new outlook. Is there not a better way to start your gardening weekends than by knowing what to do ahead of time? While an hour may not be enough time, it is a starting point within a medium (internet radio) that has far fewer commercial interruptions.
We hope that you will embrace this change with us so that we may all grow together by listening locally and acting globally.
Share your ideas and questions with us on our BlogTalk Radio Show, next time,
(this Friday at 3:00PM (EST),
We'll keep you
Down to Earth, Up to Date and On the Air!

Tip of the Week
Before the Frost
Harvest your remaining vegetables, but wait for a hard freeze before harvesting Brussels sprouts.
Don't forget to pick your herbs for drying and freezing as well as any flowers you would like for a fall bouquet.
Cure winter squash for storage. Place in a cool, sheltered shady spot for about 1 month.

Did You Know?
Cuttings
A cutting is a piece of a plant without roots but used to produce roots after it has been severed from the parent plant. Layers, suckers, etc., already have roots when they are cut off.
Slip
The term 'slip' applies to softwood cuttings because the side-shoots of which they frequently consist are sometimes pulled or slopped off the main stem without the use of a knife.

Heptacodium miconioides
|
 | | Heptacodium m. bracts |
Seven son flower is a small tree with lots of impact. Its current popularity is credited to the Arnold Arboretum for re-introducing this tree to the public.
This plant can grow in the form of a small tree or a shrub and it blooms in late August and early September with fragrant white flowers. That is not all however as the flowers fade, the bracts turn bright red giving another month of enjoyment. When all has fallen to the ground, the trunk is exposed revealing a smooth trunk with exfoliating bark.
This plant is native to China and is quite adaptable and accepting of a wide range of soil type.
While it does flower best in full sun, it can be used as an understory tree or in the shrub border. Limbing this plant up will expose the bark although it will put the flowers out of reach but not out of sight. The form is simply your preference and pruning technique.

Something to Chew On
White Acorn Squash
White acorn squash is rare, but has peak seasons during fall and winter. Encased in hard, white, inedible skin, the pale yellowish-gold flesh of the White acorn squash is sweet, with a smooth, delicate texture. Somewhat ovoid-shaped and pointed at the bottom, acorn squash is easily recognized by its thick, characteristic, longitudinal ridges. The acorn squash was a favorite of early civilizations as it could be baked whole in their outdoor clay and brick ovens. Dating back to 4000 B.C., acorn squash, sometimes called Danish squash, is an edible gourd that grows on a vine. Generally considered to be a winter squash, the acorn squash is a member of the same family as summer squash, Cucurbita pepo.
From Specialty Produce
Acorn Squash Pure
Makes 6 side-dish servings.
Ingredients
3 acorn squash, halved, the seeds and strings discarded 2 tablespoons unsalted butter freshly grated nutmeg to taste
Preparation
Sprinkle the cavities of the squash halves with salt and arrange the squash, inverted, in one layer in a buttered baking dish. Bake the squash, covered with foil, in the middle of a preheated 375F. oven for 1 hour and let it cool until it can be handled. Scoop out the squash pulp, discarding the skin, and in a food processor pure it with the butter. Transfer the pure to a saucepan and simmer it, stirring occasionally, until the excess liquid is evaporated. Season the pure with the nutmeg and salt and pepper. The pure may be made 1 day in advance and kept covered and chilled

Quote of the Week "Nothing of worth or weight can be achieved with half a mind, with a faint heart, and with a lame endeavor." ~Isaac Barrow (1630 - 1677) An English Christian theologian, and mathematician who is generally given credit for his early role in the development of infinitesimal calculus; in particular, for the discovery of the fundamental theorem of calculus. His work centered on the properties of the tangent; Barrow was the first to calculate the tangents of the kappa curve. Isaac Newton was a student of Barrow's, and Newton went on to develop calculus in a modern form. The lunar crater Barrow is named after him. |
