A Letter from the Director...
Currently, I am reading,
One Goal,
by Amy Bass. It is a story of a soccer team in a town with racial tension that united Somali refugees and local residents in Maine. In Bass's novel, athletic sportsmanship facilitates the importance of learning to work together on and off the field, to set aside preconceived prejudices, and to realize that we all aspire to achieve great things.
Initially I was interested in Bass's book, because I am a sports fan and I recently heard Steve Pemberton, author of
A Chance In The World
speak about how he overcame abuse, neglect, and prejudice as an orphan in foster care to become a trail-blazing corporate executive. The thematic similarities between Bass and Pemberton are interesting. These authors make evident that human connection through sports, libraries, communities, schools, and businesses can guide human drive and relationships.

As I bask in the March Madness glory of Villanova (one of my alma mater's), I think about the players on the soccer team in Bass's novel. I think that each one of us has the ability to achieve great things while simultaneously embracing and capitalizing on diversity whether you play a sport or not. I think that we can all make a difference in each other's lives if we take the time to get to know and work with one another. I would also like to think that Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia Seventy Sixers secretly wishes to be a librarian.

April is National Volunteer Month, and the most obvious choice for our first Volunteer Spotlight is
Barbara Sandbrook!
Growing up in a family where reading was a seamless part of everyday life, Barbara's connection to our library was always strong. She started devoting her time in 1999 as a Library Board Member and an active participant in the Friends of Nazareth Library; she currently volunteers on a weekly basis helping to shelve books and assist in any way she can. It was no surprise to anyone but her when she was honored in March for her dedication; you can find a growing collection of Travel DVDs, and soon you will see a new chair in the Children's Section, both in her honor.
Dedicating much of her time to volunteering at the library and her church, Barbara finds time to travel with her husband, Dean, and in between all of that, her favorite way to spend her spare time is to, yes, read!
Barbara enjoys both historical fiction and some non-fiction collections. She particularly enjoys reading Erik Larson's books (e.g.,
Issac's Storm: A Man, a Time, and the Deadliest Hurrican in History
), and for light-hearted reads, she recommends author, Alexander McCall Smith, who has a few collections of series books. An avid traveler, she enjoys non-fiction books by travel writer Paul Theroux (particu
larly,
Dark Star Safari: Overland from Cairo to Capetown
). One book she recommends most highly is
Midnight in Siberia
, by David Greene.
Barbara is very proud of our library, especially the many programs we provide for children and young adults. She understands the power of reading, and the importance of introducing books and the library to children. She appreciates the library's forward thinking in keeping up with technology and our accessibility
to everyone.

Not sure when your books are due? Log in and check the due dates! Or, do you already know that date is looming faster than you can finish your book? You can
renew books from your home computer! Save that last minute trip to return your books by renewing them from the comfort of your home.
- Go to our website, www.nazarethlibrary.org.
- Click "My Library Account" option under Books & Media.
- Enter your Library Card Number.
This is the 14-digit number located at the bottom of your library card.
- Enter your Password.
This is the last four digits of the telephone number you have on file.
- Click the "Log In" button.
- Click "Items Checked Out."
- Click the check box next to the item(s) you'd like to renew.
Or, click the check box next "Title" to select all items.
- Click the "Go" button.
- Click "OK" when prompted to renew selected items.
Your new due dates will be listed!
Check back each month to learn something new you can use from our website (e.g., put books on hold, set up Rosetta Stone account, etc.).
NOTE: You cannot renew books from home on the day they are due, simply call the library and we can do that for you.
Books cannot be renewed from home or by calling the library if the book is on hold for another patron.

Over the years, patrons and friends of the Memorial Library of Nazareth and Vicinity have made contributions in a variety of ways. They have taken advantage of the opportunity to reduce the cost of gifts through tax savings, while at the same time maintaining or increasing their value to the library. Memorial and other special gifts are a meaningful way of paying tribute or recognizing a special achievement. Contributions to the Library are tax deductible.
