Buttons, Risers and 3 Park Projects Approved

Pairs of large yellow traffic buttons form the centerline on a red brick street in historic downtown

The following items were approved as part of the Consent Agenda during the Monday, Aug. 26, 2024 City Council meeting:

Bob Woodruff Dog Park Shade and Restroom Replacement

Two separate projects will improve Bob Woodruff Park:

  • In the Bob Woodruff Dog Park, approximately $685,000 will be used to install shade structures in each enclosure. Benches, accessible paths and subsurface drainage, along with irrigation and sod repairs, are included in the project.

  • In Bob Woodruff Park South, over $1.1 million total will demolish an existing restroom building, so a new one can be built in an area outside of the floodplain. The new facility will meet current ADA requirements. Parking lot lighting is included.

Glen Meadows Park Renovation

Glen Meadows Park is getting a new playground and shade structures to meet current accessibility standards. The irrigation and lighting systems will also be replaced. The $1.5-million project resolves runoff and erosion issues by regrading and installing retaining walls to ensure clear walkways.

Manhole Risers and Valve Risers

These risers are for manhole rings and valve stacks that are required when installing the asphalt overlays. For just $302,000 each year, this contract supplies the manhole risers, valve risers and lids.

Installation of Pavement Marking Material

For the annual amount of $775,000, this contract is for roadway buttons and reflection materials and installation. In a typical year, this work applies to 33 miles of centerline striping, 30 intersections and 17 parking lots.

The next regular City Council meeting is Monday, Sept. 9 at 7 pm. The agenda becomes available after 5 pm on the Wednesday before the meeting. Go to Plano.gov/Agenda for the meeting signup link.

Identify Pollinators for the Bioblitz

Charge up your smartphone, don your bug spray and sign up for Plano Parks and Recreation’s annual Parks for Pollinators Bioblitz. Hosted by the National Park and Recreation Association (NRPA), this national campaign runs Sept. 1-30. Bioblitz relies on local help to find and document area pollinators and pollinator-friendly plants using the iNaturalist app. The result is a snapshot of the community’s biodiversity.

Bioblitz focus areas are Arbor Hills and Oak Point Park Nature Preserves. Sign up and connect with nature while building awareness for the crucial role pollinators play in Plano.

Visit our Parks for Pollinators webpage for more information.

Parker Road Updates

The water rehabilitation project on Parker Road from Country Place to Independence Parkway is now complete. The second project to repair the outer lanes on this portion of Parker Road begins this week. Work is weekdays, 7 am-6 pm. Two lanes may be closed between 9 am and 4 pm, but not during peak commute hours. This portion of Parker Road is being readied for the final project – an asphalt overlay, which will be applied next summer.

On East Parker between the east city limits and U.S. 75, the asphalt overlay has been installed on the turn lanes and crossovers. The main lanes will be applied in September, weather permitting. This work occurs from 9 pm to 6 am Sunday through Thursday.
