SWAT Radios, RR Crossings & Vehicle Charging Approved

The April 8 City Council Meeting was our first meeting at Davis Library while renovations are made to the Senator Florence Shapiro Council Chambers.

Major items approved during the meeting were:

Commo Gear Communications Kits

Thirty-seven communications kits were approved for the Plano Police Department SWAT team. A portion of this purchase replaces existing gear at its end of life. This is the first time that specialized kits for tactical operations have been ordered. Having these extra capabilities ensures reliable and clear communications when it is most critical. These kits work with gas masks and provide hearing protection for flash bangs and explosive breaches. The cost is just under $109,000.

Electrical Vehicle Charging Equipment

Owner-furnished electrical gear and electric vehicle charging equipment will be installed for $151,000. The equipment is needed to charge our new electric solid waste vehicles. The work fulfills the requirements of the grant funding that helped purchase the vehicles. The charging equipment will be installed at the Gerald P. Cosgrove Public Works Service Center.

Railroad Crossing and Sidewalk Improvements

This is a $180,000 design project that will be coordinated with Canadian Pacific - Kansas City Southern (CPKC) to replace existing railroad crossings. The project also includes several locations where gaps in sidewalk continuation exist around the City. The project will ultimately make these areas safer for motorists and more accessible for pedestrians.

Crossing locations include:

  • Los Rios Boulevard between 14th Street and East Plano Parkway
  • East Plano Parkway between Klein Road and Krona Drive
  • Jupiter Road between Research Drive and President George Bush Turnpike

Sidewalks to be extended are:

  • East side of Preston Road, just South of McDermott Drive (200 feet)
  • North side of 18th Street, just East of R Avenue (375 feet)
  • East Plano Parkway, just West of Klein Road (120 feet)
  • West Side of Alma Road, near 16th Street (375 feet)

Put Grass in the Bag, Not the Cart

Welcome to prime mowing season. It’s time to collect your grass clippings in brown paper bags and place them out with the weekly yard trimmings. These bags can be found at local home improvement stores. If you have a mulching mower, just leave the grass clippings on your lawn and they'll act as a natural fertilizer.

Never place leaves or grass clippings in a recycling cart. This defeats all of your other recycling efforts because it contaminates your cart and the truck that gathers it.

Contaminated loads cost twice as much as a regular load of trash. Why? The City has to pay for the recycling processing, the trip and the tonnage to the landfill.

Your clean yard trimmings and bags of grass go to the City’s composting facility to be repurposed into Texas Pure Products. It becomes compost, mulch, potting mix and garden soil blends. This is one way we divert items away from the landfill. Texas Pure brings yard life full circle by allowing an old tree to feed a new garden.
