Community Living: Sharing the Possibilities

Points to consider as your loved one transitions to adult life (age 21) from the education system, as well as varied residential communities will be described. Family members / trainers Natalie Trump and Ann Martinelli from the Community Living Education Project ( CLEP ) will share important planning steps for individuals and families that are – or will be – exploring community living options. Tips for preparing for the process – even if it may be years in the future – will be highlighted, along with how CLEP works to guide and mentor families as they explore the possibilities.  Natalie and Ann will also briefly share the importance of Person-Centered Planning for their adult children when they transitioned from the education system.

Agencies have been asked to spread the word to all parents, that the Department of Labor has made a formal suggestion that many parents of students with disabilities are entitled to take time away from work to attend their child's IEP meetings under the Family and Medical Leave Act, or FMLA if their presence at the meeting is significant to their ability to provide care for their children.

These events are held throughout the state and consist of parent workshops on topics including: support coordination, the continuum of community services, financial planning, eligibility requirements, and where to find help.

The Opportunity Expo Conference features a variety of exhibitors including: state and county government entities, community service providers, service coordinators, local health care support, recreation providers, and information & referral services. Families will have the chance to learn more about the resources in their communities and will also have the opportunity to speak with and interview potential service providers.
