Education, Prevention, and Mitigation

for Violence in the Workplace

He who fails to plan, plans to fail.”  - Winston Churchill

Developing escape plans for the environments you are in prepares you in advance for an unfortunate situation where you need to escape from an aggressive or violent incident. This preparation is not intended to make you scared; it’s intended to prepare you for risk and the unexpected.

Escape: Is to get away, as by flight or to get or stay out of the way- to avoid.

Strategy: A plan of action or policy designed to achieve a major or overall aim.

Escape Strategies:

Own the Door

The concept of “own the door” means not allowing others to get between you and the door (your escape route) when giving care -a healthcare environment (or any environment).

Dominant Hand

If a person becomes combative, they will more than likely strike you with their dominant hand. Positioning yourself on their dominant side makes it more difficult for them to strike at you.

Proper Positioning

You are always safer when you’re at a 45-degree angle to a person who is upset. When standing, approaching, providing service to upset individuals, and escorting individuals, use a 45-degree angle.

Spatial Empathy

This is a term used to describe our awareness of the proximity, activities, and comfort of the people around us. Having spatial empathy means that you are aware of your personal zones and the personal zones of other people.

Escape Planning

Refers to determining your escape route ahead of time in relation to the people/environment you are around or come in contact with.

Active Shooter

The Department of Homeland Security advises to RUN-HIDE-FIGHT during an active shooter event. Your knowledge of your Escape (RUN) route(s) is absolutely critical.
