Mayor's Greetings!

Dear Community Member,

May has arrived, bringing with it the sun-drenched promise of summer and a host of delightful opportunities for outdoor enjoyment and community engagement. It's the perfect time for all of us in the Queen City to come alive and partake in a vibrant array of celebrations. Our calendar is bursting with activities that promise to deepen our connections, enrich our involvement, and uplift our community spirit.

This month, we shine a special light on Mental Health Awareness. It's an opportunity for us to lead the charge to promote mental wellness and break down the barriers of stigma. Let's embrace open dialogues, offer unwavering support, and work together to prioritize mental health in our community, ensuring it's a place where everyone can thrive.

With Mother's Day just around the corner, let's also pause to honor and celebrate the nurturing women in our lives. Whether it's your biological mother or someone who blesses you with a mother's love, this is a time to express heartfelt gratitude and appreciation for their immeasurable love and the countless sacrifices they make. Mother's Day is a perfect time for heartfelt thank you's, tributes, and acts of kindness, carving memories that last a lifetime.

We're also excited to bring back "Clean The Queen" this May. This pivotal initiative invites every resident to join us as we beautify our town and safeguard our environment. Be a part of our efforts as we spruce up our streets, parks, and public areas. It's more than just a clean-up; it's our commitment to setting a standard for our city's future, inspiring pride and stewardship in every corner of Plainfield.

And for our sports enthusiasts, the tennis season is upon us, and we welcome the Annual State Bicycle Championship! Dust off your racquets and join us on the courts to enjoy the camaraderie and competition that tennis brings. Whether you're a seasoned veteran or a newcomer eager to learn, our community courts are ready for you to make your mark and share in the joy of this cherished sport. And don't forget to join us and cheer on your favorite cyclists as they once again utilize our Plainfield streets to go for the prize and make history.

I invite every resident to dive into these activities and events. Whether you join in the fun, lend a hand, or both, you are the key to forging a stronger, healthier, and more vibrant Plainfield—one that we can all be truly proud of.

Let's make this May a month to remember!

NJ State Annual Bike Race: Tour of Plainfield

Sunday, May 26, 2024

On May 26th, 2024, under an unblemished blue sky, the City of Plainfield once again hosted the Annual NJ State Cycling Championship. Residents turned out in droves to watch cyclists from across the state and the world compete for championship titles. 2024 will be Plainfield’s sixth year hosting this event and the crowds continue to grow as family, friends, and cycling enthusiasts come out to support the community.

Racing categories range from family fun progressing to the junior and master categories, culminating in the exhilarating professional races.

In addition to the races, delicious aromas from several food trucks permeated the air, and those who weren’t racing participated in activities for kids of all ages. Lawn games and bouncy houses fueled the excited screams of our young spectators.

Memorial Day Ceremony

Monday, May 27, 2024

The Memorial Day Service held on May 27, 2024, was a heartfelt and patriotic event honoring the ultimate and personal sacrifices of those who served our country. The service began with a solemn procession led by our Plainfield Fire Department Color Guards with an opening Prayer for the Families by Rev. Wallace, Pastor of Mt. Olive Baptist Church. Our National Anthem was performed by the young and beautiful voice of Miss Naelin McAllister.

This year’s event featured Mr. Kelly Atkins, North Region V.P. of the National Montford Point Marine Association who gave us a historical perspective on “Why We Celebrate Memorial Day”. Following remarks from Mayor Adrian O. Mapp, Assemblywoman Linda Carter, Union County Commissioner Rebecca Williams, Council President Steve Hockaday. All members of City Council were present; Council V.P. Robert Graham, Councilman Charles McCrae, Councilwoman Julienne Cherry, Councilman Richard Wyatt, Councilwoman Terri Briggs-Jones, Councilman Charles McCrea, and Councilwoman Dr. Darcella Sessomes.

In addition to Mr. Akins impactful words, Mayor Adrian O. Mapp and Commander Hawkins Jr., both provided powerful statements emphasizing the importance of remembering and honoring those who served our country.

The ceremony concluded with a moving tribute sung by Ian Johnson “Go Rest High on That Mountain” by Vince Gill.  Closing prayer for the family and community led by Minister Bobby Jones of New Generation Worship Center.

The service was well-attended, reflecting the community’s strong sense of respect and gratitude for the men and women who gave the greatest sacrifice. It was a day of reflection and unity, ensuring that the memories of those who served and sacrificed for the nation are preserved for future generations.
