Announcements and Updates:

Admin Volunteer Opportunity with CalFresh Team!

Our CalFresh team has a need for some ongoing administrative support. This opportunity will take place at the warehouse and involve filing, scanning, data entry into Excel and Microsoft Access, and other data management. Basic computer literacy is required, and the opportunity will occur Wednesday-Friday mornings from 10am-12pm. We're looking for a handful of folks to rotate through each week.

Click here for more info and to sign up for a training shift with our CalFresh Manager.

Friendly Reminder - Please remove yourself if your plans change!

We need full shifts to get through the holidays so if you're signed up and you can't make it, someone on the waitlist probably can! Please make sure to remove yourself from any shifts that no longer work for you so that someone else can fill the spot. If you have trouble removing yourself, just shoot us an email and we can help!

Holiday Volunteer Celebration - You're invited!

We invite you to join us on Friday, December 15th from 10am-12:30pm for some light refreshments, fun games, and quality time with your fellow volunteers and PFB staff. This is a celebration of all of your hard work this year and a chance for us to say THANK YOU for your service to our community. Please rsvp here so we know how much food to order!

Volunteer Spotlight:

Lovingly compiled by Jeremy + Grace

Karl A.

I really enjoy volunteering at the Placer Foodbank - the volunteers and the volunteer coordinators are some of the nicest people I’ve met since retiring and moving to Lincoln two years ago.

Favorite Foodbank tasks: Delivering food bags to the Roseville elementary schools and working the community food distributions. Why? I really like to see the end results of all the hard work done by the food bank volunteers.

Favorite Book: I don’t have one favorite, but my favorite authors are Randy Wayne White, Robert Crais, Steve Berry and any UK crime drama / mystery authors.

Start with volunteering: It goes way back to the early 1970s when I joined the Boy Scouts. We did community service on a regular basis and I was required to do a significant community project when I earned my Eagle Scout. I’ve also been fortunate to have worked for many high tech companies that fostered and supported employees giving back to the community.

Hobbies: Leading a new Walk For Wellness Group (Sun City Lincoln Hills) and walking in general. Reading. Baking. Travel (international and the US). I joined a Craft Beer Enthusiast Club that visits all the great craft brewers in the greater Sacramento area.

Pet: My 11 year old Aussie Breac

Movie: Great Escape and PT 109. After seeing the Great Escape the first time, I starting digging a tunnel in my backyard (only made it 3 feet and quit).

Sue and Liam T.

When the pandemic started and Liam was doing school at home, I started looking for places that we could volunteer. There were so many people that were having trouble and we wanted to help out where we could. At the time he was 11 and we had to wait until he was 12 to start volunteering at the Placer Food Bank, which is one of the few places that lets 12 year olds volunteer with their parents. We started that January and have slowly tried every shift that the food bank offers. Liam's favorites are talking to Jeremy, meal kits and salvage packing, where you will usually find him trying to stack boxes as perfectly straight as possible. I on the other hand enjoy housekeeping (it's more enjoyable cleaning other people's places than your own) and distributions. He is currently an 8th grader at Buljan and almost 14. Since he has gone back to school it has been harder for him to volunteer as often as he'd like, but he tries to schedule something during breaks. We both have really enjoyed working with the coordinators and volunteers, it's what keeps us coming back each year. I have never worked (or volunteered) with a nicer group of people.

We have three dogs, lots of Legos, and are both big Star Wars fans (especially Darth Vader). We have lived in multiple states, but moved here from Minnesota. Since I have always lived in the Midwest, I have really enjoyed the lack of snow and cold that moving to California brought (-30 F in Minnesota is really cold). Reading and crochet are the two hobbies that I get to do less often than I'd like. My favorite books are mysteries, while Liam loves Terry Pratchett's Discworld series.

Elaine D.

Favorite Color: Teal

If you could live anywhere, where would it be and why? I like living where I live and wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. We moved to Sun City Lincoln Hills in 2016 and we love it. It is very beautiful and quiet.

Why do you volunteer with Placer Food Bank? I wanted to do something to give back to the community. I love meeting new people, the partnership and teamwork. I also like to get in my steps for the day! 😊

Favorite book? Hobbies? I don’t have a favorite book, but my favorite author is Janet Evanovich. My hobbies are pickle ball, golf, step classes and HIIT Class (High Intensity Interval Training).

Anything you want to share? I started working at the Food Bank when I worked at Wells Fargo. We were given 16 hours paid time a year to do volunteer work. I enjoyed going to the Food Bank, so when I retired in 2021, that was the 1st thing that came to mind to keep me busy. Now with pickle ball, golf, and my exercise, it’s harder to get in all of the shifts that I was doing prior to summer. I am hoping with the rainy weather (hopefully) coming that I will be able to get in more shifts to fill the pickle ball and golf spots on my calendar.

F3 Workout Group

Once again PFB had the pleasure of hosting F3 Workout Group, a “leadership program that combines Fitness, Fellowship, and Faith to grow as leaders in the community.” They look for opportunities in the community where they can make a positive impact, and we are so glad that they chose PFB as they are a very positive, energetic group!

PG&E

PG&E provides natural gas and electric service to approximately 16 million people throughout a 70,000-square-mile service area in northern and central California. PG&E employees were looking for an opportunity to gather together and give back to the community where they live, work, and play, and PFB was the lucky recipient of their time and energy!

Safeway Fundraisers!

We want to thank Amelia, Beverley, and Larry (L-R), who spent Saturday 11/18 at our local Safeway helping to spread the word about Safeway's Nourishing Neighbors fundraiser event and secured $900 in donations from shoppers!

The fundraiser is ongoing thru December 25th and all Placer County Safeway stores are participating. All funds raised will be used to purchase supplemental food for our programs! Let folks know about it and help us get more food for our programs and partner agencies.
