The Monthly Morsel

Recap of June 2024 and FY 24-25

Recap of FY 23-24 and Plans for FY 24-25

Hello Folks!

We are aware with continual increases of neighbors attending our distributions, that our community is feeling the impact of inflation, energy costs, and other general cost of living increases in our region now more than ever.

PFB is also experiencing the same impact. We rely on grants and donations to support our operation. Unfortunately, this year has presented challenges with some well-funded grants completely going away, and individual donors are contributing less. Again, it is evident that many families are navigating the challenges of soaring living expenses.

It is important that we are open with you about our current financial situation and the steps that we are taking to strengthen our financial position – all with the intent to offer a robust array of services for our neighbors in the future.

Our teams across the organization are working together to adjust our fund development and purchasing strategies, while actively exploring new fundraising and food sourcing avenues. Our goal, despite reductions in our operating budget impacting our food purchasing power, is to continue with providing free food assistance at our PantryToGo distributions, schools, senior communities, and our partner agencies.

You may know that we purchase all the non-perishable food items that we distribute at our ten (10) PantryToGo sites because the volume of food needed is greater than any donated product that we receive from our retail partners. By purchasing products, we have more control with scheduling the distribution of the product rather than waiting to see when a retail donation arrives.

With our current budget challenges, we are no longer able to purchase this product going into the new fiscal year. Once our current inventory runs out in about six to eight weeks,

we will no longer have the boxed meal kits available at our distributions.

At PantryToGo distributions, we will still offer a variety of fresh produce, donated retail bread and baked goods, Starbucks items through their FoodShare program, and possibly one-off large-scale donations of non-perishable items that we receive from some of our wholesale partners.

Our school and senior programs will continue to receive non-perishable foods, as those programs receive funding from other sources and will remain intact for this fiscal year.

We are planning to host an open forum for our volunteers in two weeks where you can share your questions, concerns, ideas, and other feedback with our team. Please RSVP here so we know how many people to expect. We will do our best to provide answers and insights into the budget decision-making process and our next steps. You may also submit questions or ideas anonymously in advance via this link.

We will share a post-forum summary for those who are unable to attend. We hope to see you there!

One note about the numbers below - we do not currently track the number of unduplicated households or individuals that attend our distributions. This is changing in the new fiscal year, through our Service Insights initiative. However, the numbers below represent "instances of service" or how many total times we gave food to every household or person that attended our distributions, including all repeat attendees. This can make the numbers look artificially high, if we're reading them as the number of unduplicated or unique households that picked up, regardless of how many times they came during the year.

Susan and Ed

What is your favorite food?

Mexican food. With green or red chilies.

Hobbies?

Susan – I enjoy sewing.

Ed- I enjoy golfing and collecting stamps.

Favorite Book or show?

Susan – Sapiens

Ed – The Monk of Mokha

Favorite volunteer opportunity?

Susan – Likes them all. Each one has its own challenges.

How did you find PFB?

Susan volunteered at Kitchen Angels and found our website.

Why did you start volunteering?

Susan for her 70th bday, wanted to volunteer for 70 hours. A “70 for 70”. (Already completed their 70 and she still helps out!)

Ed wanted to volunteer because he was a box boy at Alpha Beta in the 60’s.

If you could be any animal, what would you be and why?

Susan – I would want to be a dolphin. I would like to be in the water.

Ed- I would want to be a hummingbird. To get in and out of places quickly.

Cindy A.

I grew up in a large family (# 5 of six kids) in Orange County, CA. We are all still pretty close and family has always been important to me. With large family gatherings cooking and food has always been an integral part of my life. I still enjoy cooking and have been experimenting with both Mediterranean and Thai a lot lately but will always be a huge fan of Mexican seafood! I miss the days of being able to find abalone!

I started working for a grocery company at the age of 18 in the transportation and logistics aspects of getting the food both into the warehouse as well as out of the stores. I ended up spending over 40 years in that industry - primarily in procurement and supplier relations. When I looked at volunteer opportunities to keep me going, I knew I wanted to continue to help make sure people had food on their table.

I have enjoyed learning about Placer Food Bank and all the ways their mission to help have been successful. For me it is a great fit and I hope to be able to continue to learn and contribute. I think I enjoy the distributions the most [so far] as it allows a connection with these families and with the other volunteers.

I moved to the Sacramento area in 1999 and that is when I went to work for UNFI - at the time a small natural foods distributor called Mountain Peoples Warehouse. Watching that grow to a large national company was very rewarding to be a part of. It made me much more aware of the foods I eat. For a number of years, I maintained a large garden to grow our own vegetables.

Favorite foods - I am one of the few who loves black licorice! I was always the one that got the black jellybeans because no one else wanted them.

Fall is my favorite time of the year. After long summers the crispness in the air and smells of baking are a welcome change. Fall is a great time for long walks with my dog Rosie and playing golf with friends.

CAI Community Service Committee

Volunteers from the CAI Community Service Committee enjoyed their first shift at PFB last Summer so much that they returned for a shift on June 5th this year.

This time around they helped us pack a variety of produce for our Roseville mobile distribution. Our deep gratitude goes out to this great group of folks. We look forward to hosting them again!
