Sorting Re-Training - Required to sign up for Sorting shifts
Starting this month (August 2023) ALL volunteers will be required to go through a sorting re-training before signing up for sorting shifts.
Some of the most common feedback we received at the town hall in June was that folks want more clarity and instruction about sorting. To address this request, we've created a new sorting training/re-training that will hopefully answer your lingering questions and get all of us on the same page about how we sort the donated product.
The re-trainings will take place in the same shift as folks who are training for the first time, because we want everyone to get the same information.
If you want to continue sorting or are interested in trying it out, sign up for a Sorting Training shift. This shift will be a requirement from now on in order to sign up for a general sorting shift, and you will see a new qualification on your profile after you attend the training shift. This new qualification will unlock access to sign up for regular Sorting Superstars shifts.

Heat Safety
It's that time of year again, friends! Please check the weather before your shifts and take care of yourselves in the heat! A few important reminders and tips:
-
Start hydrating 1-2 days BEFORE planned heat exposure (like food distributions). Drink more water than usual in the days leading up to your shifts.
- Wear comfortable, breathable clothing, ideally with sun protection.
- Put on sunscreen and reapply after a few hours!
- Take breaks in the shade to cool down, even if you don't "feel like" you need it.
- Remind your fellow volunteers to drink water and take care of themselves too!

Shelby G.
Shelby Gord has worked for almost 25 years in police records for the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety. She moved to the Rocklin area about 4 years ago after retiring to be closer to her parents, who live in Penn Valley. One day a week, she commutes down to Sunnyvale as the office manager for the officer’s association. She loves to travel, read, swim, take classes from OLLI at Sierra College, and volunteer! She started volunteering for PFB about 3 years ago and loves the variety of opportunities. It’s been a wonderful experience, for Shelby, meeting all the caring volunteers and supportive staff. She always says whatever she is doing at the moment is the most difficult task but she does enjoy just about everything from the distributions to packing carrots! If you ever happen to work a shift with Shelby, you might easily mistake her for a staff member. She is a hardworking go-getter and we appreciate her willingness to share her valuable insight to help our programs improve. Her passion for this work is very inspiring and we enjoy being in the “trenches” with her.

Charles M.
Charles was born in Oxnard, California, he attended Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. After marriage and three sons being born, they moved to Port Angeles, Washington in 1982. Charles was a Certified Public Accountant for 41 years. He specialized in estate and trust planning and nonprofits. However, his passion for much of this time was in coaching sports. Baseball, basketball and especially soccer. He coached for over 25 years. Once his sons had grown, he switched gears and was elected to the Port Angeles School Board. It was during his three terms of office that he discovered the consequences of hunger on a child’s educational capability.
After his wife’s death, He retired to Roseville, California to be near his four grandchildren. They are the center of his life. He also enjoys golfing, reading, cooking and traveling. He has found a second family in the wonderful people at Placer Food Bank both volunteers and employees (Jeremy is his cooler older brother). He truly believes that together we do make a difference in people’s lives. And I believe that as well! Charles always has a great attitude when he comes into the warehouse and packs food or at the distributions as our less glamorous tasks of traffic. He is one of the funniest, most selfless people I have ever met.

Colin M.
January 13, 2023, is a day that changed the course of the PFB volunteer dept. That was the day Colin went through Orientation. Since then he has accumulated over 180+ volunteer hours, much of it over the summer where he spent between 20-40 hours each week helping out our staff.
A little bit about Colin: his favorite food is a homemade hamburger. His hobbies are shooting pool, learning Japanese, gaming and watching movies. His favorite movie is “No Country for Old Men” and his favorite game is “Dead by Daylight”. He has a second-degree black belt in karate and used to be a karate teacher. One of his favorite things is to help people and give back to the community that has given him so much. From running the volunteer shifts, leading orientations, and working on our boring Excel sheets, Colin has never turned down a task and always has a positive attitude. I’m sure I speak on behalf of ALL Placer Food Bank staff when I say that Colin is one of a kind and we are extremely grateful for his impact and will miss him when he leaves for UNR. If you see Colin before he leaves on August 16, wish him the best!
“I am very thankful for all the kindness shown by everyone, and for welcoming me into this wonderful community. I am incredibly grateful to all the volunteers/staff. I love every minute of volunteering at PFB!!!” - Colin
Surprising Fact - Grace and Colin both studied at Charles' alma mater, Loyola Marymount University, before they ended up at PFB (although Charles graduated a few years ahead of them.)
