Announcements and Updates:

Volunteer Town Hall - Friday, June 23th, 10am-12pm

We want your feedback! We are hosting our first-ever volunteer town hall on June 24th and we hope you will join us! This will be a chance to ask our staff questions, give feedback on our programs and your experience volunteering with us, and share ideas about how to improve or grow our program.

We have a submission box in the warehouse for questions, ideas, or suggestions, and you can also submit anonymously online. We'll respond to as many as we can at the event.

Heat Safety at Mobile Distributions: Training Shift

If this week of "Spring" is any indication, we are in for a long, hot summer. Before it gets any warmer, we are offering a quick training on OSHA’s heat safety protocols for anyone interested.

Our hope is that we'll train enough folks to have one or two at each mobile distribution. This will help us spot anyone who needs extra support before they are in any real danger, and intervene to prevent any more severe heat-related symptoms.

This will be held at the beginning of a lead volunteer training/info session, so if you are interested in learning more about being a lead volunteer, you are also welcome to stay for that portion of the training!

Stamp Out Hunger 2023 - Limited Saturday Shifts Available

It's that time of year again! Every May, the USPS runs a large food drive with Feeding America, and this year's drive is on Saturday, May 13th. Our staff and volunteers meet the mail carriers at the post office and unload the donations from their vehicles into our trucks.

Despite this being an annual event, we rarely get much info from the USPS coordinators until the week before, so the shift times for each site linked below are tentative, pending confirmation from the post offices. If you are available, sign up and we'll send you more info once we have it!

Story Gathering Volunteers

We need help gathering stories from our neighbors at our food distributions! If you like meeting new folks and talking with people about their lived experiences, this is the opportunity for you! Click here to let us know you're interested and we'll reach out with more info and training dates.

Delivery Drivers for Small Drop-Offs

Raley's Food for Families gave us two small cargo vans recently that we are going to start using for some of our smaller food drop-offs. If you have a current driver's license, a clean driving record, and a desire to get out of the warehouse on occasion, this could be a good fit for you. Click here if you're interested.

Volunteer Spotlight:

Operations and Transportation Volunteers

Lovingly compiled by Jeremy

Randy C.

A resident of Roseville since 1987, Randy retired from a 42-year career in urban planning in 2017. Soon after retiring, Randy decided to devote some of his time to volunteer work. This initially included the Make A Wish Foundation and Habitat for Humanity, and grew to include assisting the US Forest Service Rangers in Desolation Wilderness. Randy has been married to this soulmate for over 40 years. She is a professional musician and music teacher. Their daughter lives in Rocklin. Randy's leisure activities currently include hot yoga, golf, kayaking, backpacking, cooking, and travel. In addition, Randy's wife keeps him busy with a long list of home improvement projects. Randy has been volunteering as a truck driver at the Placer Food Bank for the past 5 years. He enjoys the physical exertion, as well interactions with other Food Bank volunteers and staff and store personnel.

Bob D.

Bob was born in Michigan and moved to California at the age of 7. He grew up in So Cal and when he turned 17, decided to join the Marine Corps. His battalion was sent to Cuba and the rest of his time in the Corps was able to travel to Okinawa, Japan, Philippines, China and S. Korea. After leaving the service, Bob had a few various jobs before ending up at a company where he met his future wife. They have been married 56 years and have 6 kids, 15 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren (so far!) Besides family time, Bob enjoys traveling and used to be into photography. His favorite food is Mexican food. Over 10 years ago when Bob’s wife’s church started helping at the food bank, he came along with the working party and at that time, asked if they needed any volunteer truck drivers. The rest is history. Bob is an amazing volunteer and an even better person. He’s very genuine and easy to get along with. He spends most of his time on the road when he volunteers, but if you get the chance, say hi!

Ken S.

Ken was born in 1951 in Binghamton, New York. He moved to California when he was 5 and retired from Intel in 2015 after 28 years. He has one sibling in Oregon and he visits them as much as possible. Ken has been a volunteer driver at PFB since 2011 and loves what he does. His hobbies include golfing, kayaking, hiking and cycling amongst other things. Favorite food is “seefood” because if he sees food, he is going to eat it. I had the complete joy of riding along with Ken on his truck routes and telling jokes and laughing is a huge part of who he is. He always has interesting things to say or some interesting facts. Eventually, he may move to Tennessee, so if you want an interesting interaction that you will not forget, then you should stop him and introduce yourself to him when you get the chance. Also, he hits fire hydrants and causes the fire department and himself, lots of time and resources. But we wouldn’t trade him for the world.
