Equipment highlight: WELD DECK
CPW 125-4 Series 2
Performance &
Quality
- at work.
Ensuring that welders have continuous power is essential to keeping this part of the pipeline construction process moving. Utilizing substantial research and the knowledge of industry leaders and technicians, Vanguard Equipment, Inc. has developed the
CPW 125-4 Series 2 welding package, the Weld Deck.
|
|
| Weld Deck pictured here is attached to the flat deck of a PANTHER T8 carrier with slewing canopy. |
Providing continuously powered welding, the Weld Deck has unique features that have enhanced the quality and efficiency of onsite pipeline welding.
- Power generation is independent of the carrier, allowing the unit to be moved without shutting down the power which results in faster cycle time.
- A closely-governed genset results in tighter frequency control, creating higher quality welds and fewer weld repairs.
- The cycling time of line-up clamps is much less with the Weld Deck package.
- No downtime for the compressor while moving the unit further enhances its ability to replenish the air much faster than other designs.
|
The Weld Deck is designed and built for flexibility. Interchangeable adapter plates allow for mounting onto any desired carrier - such as Cat® D6N Dozers and 71H or 72H pipelayers - via its winch mounts. The unit can also be supplied in a flat-deck |
arrangement that can be mounted onto a skid, the PANTHER T8, T12 or other carriers. The welding module can be installed and removed quickly. The module is bolted to the carrier and the fuel line is connected to the carrier's fuel tank.

If you are going to run a welding crew all day, reliable equipment and the most effective technology are needed to keep work going at a steady pace. According to Raymond Johnson, a welding foreman with more than twenty-seven years of experience, automatic welding and the
Weld Deck to power his welders are game changers. These examples of welding technology gives the contractor the ability to maintain a high volume of completed welds without sacrificing quality and provides a consistent product all the way down the pipeline. The Weld Deck powers up to eight welders, is convenient and will operate effectively in most weather conditions.

Mr. Johnson says that he has a number of 71H pipelayers on his job-site currently that have the Weld Deck attached to the rear of the machine with jibs attached to the boom to hold a protective shack over the pipe joint during the automatic welding process and that they use them every day. "I like Cat equipment because they stay on top of their business and if you are going to run a welding crew all day, reliable equipment along with the right technology, to keep us working at a steady pace, is essential", says Mr. Johnson.
PLM has a product support team that is there to assist with any set-up or transition of the Weld Deck on your project and to be the liaison with Vanguard, the manufacturer, for any challenges. Let's work together.

Pipeline Safety Leadership Training
Engage employees in a system of accountability that results in safe operations.
Safety has always been an important topic, but now - more than ever before - the pipeline industry recognizes the need to do more than 'check the boxes' to fulfill policies, procedures and safety activities.
This is because while those steps are important, they do not mean success by themselves. In order to build beyond the safety basics a
change in attitude
and the way we address important safety issues must take place.
|

|
Now, with a new approach to training that focuses on affecting attitudes and behaviors, leaders have a road map for engaging employees in a system of accountability that results in safe operations.
|
This program was built by some of the top pipeline leaders in the industry along with PLM, the global Cat pipeline dealer, and Caterpillar Safety Services, the leader in best practices and proven processes to help you elevate your leadership to the next level of your safety journey.
This training is specifically tailored to help pipeline foreman with: |
- Leading a Safety Culture
- What impact they have on the safety culture, daily decisions & encourage teamwork
- Safety Accountability
- Define & plan for safe work, how to train & coach effectively
- Effective Communication
- Setting safety expectations, communication style, speaking and listening
- Risk Tolerance
- What factors influence risk, manage risk daily & choose to reduce risk
- Hazard Recognition
- After mandatory compliance is met and conditions change
There are a total of 24 sessions that are approximately 30 - 45 mins each. What this means is a contractor can choose to train their foremen using one session a week or month. If time permits the foremen can be trained in three and a half days by going through the program consecutively or they can take up to three years. The program was designed with this flexibility to suit the needs and time of each contractor.
What gives the training program longevity is that it can be used over and over again to change the safety culture. Even with ever changing audiences, this approach will stand the test of time because the research and known results are embedded into a cultural approach that is successful every time it's applied.
