Career exploration opportunities abound at Healy
From career aptitude tests to college visits, industry visits, and on-site demonstrations, Healy High School students are exposed to a world of career exploration during their time at Healy. Thank you to the administration, teachers, and Ms. Essen for making these opportunities happen and making these experiences a priority. Here are a couple experiences from this month:
Exploring jobs at Morrison County Government Center
On April 3rd, the Career Readiness classes took a field trip to learn more about the Morrison County Government Center and the careers that it has to offer. Students were able to learn and talk to employers in each department: Sheriff, Public Works, Attorney and County Judge, Health and Human Services, Auditor/Treasurer, Recorder's Office, Community Corrections, Information Technology, Land Services, and Veteran Services Office.
Students also viewed new technologies being utilized by the county: drones used by the Sheriff's Department, road design equipment, new snow plow technology, and more. Students walked away feeling intrigued by the visit and all the job opportunities available to them just 20 minutes from home.
This just in: 10-12th graders will also have the opportunity to travel to Little Falls Exchange Arena on May 8th for an Outdoor Career and Community Resource Fair hosting over 50 local employers. Sign up by May 1st in the district office.

Knife River visits with students
The Advanced Electrical Wiring class had an opportunity to talk to representatives from Knife River last week. They explained how their electricians work with low voltage all the way up to 4-phase electrical loads. They talked about and showed their mobile asphalt sites and the need for operators and electricians on site every time to initiate and run their equipment.
Students had an opportunity to ask questions about experience, skills required, education, and employment opportunities. The students were engaged and interested in hearing about young people who started at Knife River and how they moved up in the company. One of the Knife River representatives was the CDL trainer. He talked about the steps required to obtain a CDL and what having that license meant to the person as a driver and as a representative of Knife River.
Hot off the press: Little Falls Community Services is offering a CDL course starting April 29 from 3:30 - 6:30pm on Mondays and Wednesdays for anyone 18 years and older who has a valid license and clean driving record. For more information or to find the link to register, check the Pierz Community Education page.

Pioneer Elementary brought Mary Poppins, Jr. to the stage
Pioneer Elementary fifth and sixth graders took the stage this week to present Mary Poppins, Jr., a delightful musical that they've been working on since just after Christmas break—over three months of dedication. Congratulations to the cast, crew, and directors on a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious production!
Special thanks to the staff who supported our students to bring this production to life: Director Audrey Aspen, Assistant Director/Stage Manager Jill Egland, Makeup/Publicity/Support Carol Voss, and Costumes/Support Jessica Foss

Minnesota Author Jane O'Reilly visited with all fifth graders this week. Fifth graders did a novel study on The Secret of Goldenrod and really enjoyed this novel. It had many different layers and themes about relationships and included the personification of an old house called Goldenrod.
Jane told her story to the students about the house in the book and how it was inspired by the house that she grew up in. She also shared her journey to publishing her story with a traditional publisher. The students enjoyed the chance to ask questions about the story, along with encouraging her to write a sequel to the story—which she is currently working on!
