In December 2021, the shelter received a call about a stray dog in someone's front yard who could not walk. The stray was brought into the shelter's care and identified as "Mr. Pibb" per his microchip. Despite being microchipped, Mr.Pibb's owners never came to claim him and refused to contact the shelter.
Mr. Pibb's hind legs were completely paralyzed, and he was subsequently placed into foster care and later diagnosed with Valley Fever, a disease caused by inhaling fungal spores found in soil and dust. Typically, Valley Fever is easily treated with minor symptoms when caught early. Mr Pibb, however, had a severe case of untreated Valley Fever, which resulted in lesions on his spine. These lesions are what caused his paralysis. It was thought Mr. Pibb would never walk again. Despite his unfortunate prognosis, Mr. Pibb had a village dedicated to his care. After months of hard work, Mr. Pibb regained the ability to walk.
For years, Mr. Pibb was marketed for adoption but never found the right home. That is until recently. After nearly 900 days in the shelter's care and traveling over 2,000 miles, Mr. Pibb's fosters got to drop him off at his forever home in Maryland. Mr. Pibb is very loved in his new home and enjoys spending his time playing with his new human siblings.
