Asian American, Native Hawaiian, & Pacific Islander Heritage Month

Supervisor Sylvia Lee was invited by State Legislator Junelle Cavero to be introduced at the Arizona State Legislature, House of Representatives Chamber with other Arizona Asian Leaders on May 1st during the start of Asian American Heritage Month.

In 2022, according to AAPI (Asian & Pacific Islander American Vote Data) Voter Demographics, there were over 46,000 AAPI residents in Pima County. And the growth of AAPI residents grew by 51% in the state of Arizona between 2010-2020!

Why was May chosen to celebrate?

"In 1992, Congress established May as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month to coincide with two key milestones: the arrival of the nation’s first Japanese immigrants (May 7, 1843) and Chinese workers’ pivotal role in building the transcontinental railroad (completed May 10, 1869). The move expanded what had been Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week since 1978. In 2021, a presidential proclamation expanded this to include Native Hawaiians. This Facts for Features includes separate sections on the Asian and the Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander populations, which the Office of Management and Budget in 1997 split into two race categories."  - U.S. Dept. of Commerce

We A.R.E Gems Program Recognizes D3 Staffer, Jennifer Cabrera

If a constituent in District 3 has a question or concern, Jenn Cabrera will tackle it until she gets to the bottom of the issue. It’s what has made her a dependable fixture in the office of Supervisor Sharon Bronson – and now Dr. Sylvia Lee – for 15 years.

Cabrera’s knowledge of County departments and the many programs and services they offer has been instrumental in helping people who are experiencing a crisis or who need access to government services. Cabrera’s supervisor has praised her for her honesty, active listening and respectful treatment of others. “Even the most upset constituent,” wrote her nominator, “would be calm and understanding at the end of the phone call with Jenn.”

Transition Center Lowering

the Rate of Recidivism

Pima County launched the transition center program in June 2023 in an effort to connect people being released from the County jail with the resources they need.

By engaging with those who were charged with non-violent misdemeanors, the Justice Service Navigators are able to identify and assist with any barriers the formerly incarcerated may face while going through the legal process. As a result, the recidivism rate dropped by 17% for those who stopped by the Transition Center for even a single visit!
