PILGRIM’S PROGRESS

THE WEEKLY NEWSLETTER OF PILGRIM LUTHERAN CHURCH

Lexington, SC

Thursday, June 13, 2024

Dear Pilgrims:

Happy Thursday, everybody! My thanks to Dr. Wayne Kannaday for serving as Pilgrim’s worship leader the past two Sundays. For Sundays June 16 and 23, we will welcome Pr. David Coffman, Campus Pastor at Newberry College and member of Pilgrim, as our preacher and presider.

Last Saturday, I attended (by Zoom) the 199th assembly of the SC Synod. Council President, Mary Beth Hill, was also virtually attending. Pilgrim’s presence was also seen in several other ways: in the leadership of Synod Council Vice-President Lexanne Graves who is Sheri Kimball’s daughter; in an interview with our Vice-President, Jimmy Smith, who appeared in a video about a ministry to veterans in the Charleston area; in a video featuring the campus ministry at Newberry College with Pr. David Coffman; and in photos of several of us (Pilgrims) when we served a meal at the campus ministry at USC. And though neither of us won our elections, both Pr. David and I were nominated for positions on committees or boards.

The synod also highlighted their (our) new Mission Statement: Equipping church leaders to develop impactful faith communities and disciples of Jesus. The new Vision Statement is this: Every person in South Carolina experiences God’s love and grace. I think those are both great statements and goals for all of us.

The next Synod assembly will be in-person and will include a big celebration of the 200th Anniversary of the Synod. See the calendar reminder below and make a note of it. Consider being a voting member from Pilgrim or signing up to attend the anniversary celebration.

Blessings from afar and see you soon!

PLC pursues new insurance

On Sunday, June 10, 2024, at its monthly meeting, Pilgrim’s Church Council recently voted to purchase new property and liability policies for the church. This decision came after learning that Brotherhood Mutual Insurance Company, our insurance company for 28 years, was no longer willing to cover us. Two things factored into their decision.

First, AM Best, the largest credit rating agency in the world specializing in the insurance industry, downgraded the Financial Strength Rating of Brotherhood from an A- (excellent) to a B++ (good) and the Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating from an a- (excellent) to a bbb+ (good) — making the Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating outlook negative.

As a result, Brotherhood did not renew certain policies. Pilgrim’s package policy of property and general liability was one of those policies not renewed because, over the last few years, Brotherhood Mutual has paid out $260,000 in claims from Pilgrim (hail and roof in 2021) (freeze of Jan. 2022).

Thanks to the knowledgeable help, guidance, and hard work of Lou Galloway, who retires this week from Propel Insurance and has over 50 years of experience, we were able to find other coverage.

On Monday, June 10, with Sovereign Insurance Company (our insurance agent), we were able to secure two policies with two separate insurance companies. Certain Underwriters at Lloyd’s of London is the issuing insurance company for the property policy. It has a $64,455 annual premium. This is the lowest price that any company willing to insure Pilgrim quoted us. We hope to get a more reasonable price as we work to have no new claims with the new property insurance provider this year.

Our loss record over the last few years is the primary reason for the sharp increase (freeze water damage and roof). Because of that, we knew that we would be unable to get a new property policy for the same $27,065 annually that we were paying for our package policy of property and general liability.

General Star Indemnity Company is the issuing insurance company for the liability policy, which costs $6,044 annually.

For your information, Brotherhood Mutual still holds both our Workers’ Compensation policy and the Preschool’s Workers’ Compensation policy. It also holds an Accident Medical Policy for the Preschool’s students.

Feel free to email any questions you have to me at mbhillmeehan@gmail.com.

Our Hospitality Table Needs You!

Thank you, Martha and David Drafts, for stepping up at the Hospitality Table on Sunday. Don’t forget I want your recipes!

Thanks to Lisa Davis, Carol Murray, and Kristin Dashiell, who will take this Sunday, June 16.

We still have June 23 and 30 and all of July open. If you can volunteer, please email Mary Beth Hill at mbhillmeehan@gmail.com or Courtney Coker at plc@wearepilgrim.com.

Stepping Boldly Update

Thanks to the 43 households who have turned in their pledge cards. This brings us to 62.5% percent of our goal. This represents a 39% giving increase over 2023. One hundred precent of our Council members and the Generosity Team have pledged an increase in their giving. Thank you!

We want everyone to be a part. Add your commitment to our list of those Stepping Boldly in the footsteps of Jesus this week!

Faith Formation Team Hosts

Saturday Retreat

A Congregational Retreat takes place at Camp Kinard in Leesville on Saturday, August 17, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The day will include faith formation time for younger kids and teens, a service project around the camp for adults, canoeing and kayaking on the lake for everyone, a cookout, and plenty of swimming time in the new pool. Save the date!

We Now Have a Pastor’s Discretionary Fund!

Thanks to a generous donor, we have re-established a Pastor’s Discretionary Fund to support members and friends of Pilgrim who could use some extra help with food, rent, gas, or medical needs. We encourage other generous folks to contribute as well. Pastor Mary oversees the distribution of these funds and keeps a confidential record of them.

Want to give? Use your online giving, a check, or cash, and indicate your gift is for this Fund.

Your Summer Food Pantry Needs You

During the summer months, Pilgrim’s Community Food Pantry is being visited even more frequently, and we need your help to keep it filled. Please pick up a few items the next time you shop or consider giving a monetary offering designated for the Food Pantry so that we can shop for you. Meats and toiletries continue to be in high demand.

Many thanks for your continued generosity as we reach out to those in need.

We are in need of more casseroles! We are planning a casserole making party soon, so stay tuned for the details! In the meantime, if you would like to provide some comfort food for this ministry, we could use a casserole or two. The pans, lids and labels are in the fellowship hall kitchen on the counter to the right of the white freezer. Please use our standard recipes. If you need a copy, email delores@wingardsmarket.com

If you know someone who could use a homemade comfort casserole, please feel free to take it out of the freezer.

Here’s how Holy Casseroley works:

  • The casseroles are in the white freezer in the Kitchen in the Fellowship Hall. They are labeled with names, ingredients, and cooking instructions. All the ingredients are pre-cooked, so reheating in an oven or microwave is easy.
  • If you take a casserole, there is a legal pad on the counter to the right of the freezer. Please write the name of the casserole you are taking, date, and recipient’s name.
  • If you would like someone else to deliver the casserole for you, please email delores@wingardsmarket.com with the recipient’s name, address, and telephone number.

Save the Date

The 200th Assembly of the SC Synod will be held in Columbia on June 12-14, 2025.

Gather to celebrate the 200th Anniversary of our Synod!
