Mimi
Pets of the Homeless recently received a call from a disabled homeless man who lives in his truck in San Francisco, CA.  He called about Mimi, his 6-year-old spayed female Pit Bull mix who had been hit by a car.  He didn't know what to do or where to turn, so he went to the SPCA of San Francisco who told him about Pets of the Homeless.

Mimi was in shock and may have had a broken paw.  Pets of
the Homeless approved an emergency veterinary examination and x-rays.  Mimi had a fractured tibula that was going to require surgery to fix.  Pets of the Homeless approved and financially assisted with surgery to mend Mimi's leg.  This included pain injections, anesthesia, iv fluids, hospitalization, surgery, e-collar,  and antibiotics.

Lucy
Pets of the Homeless recently sent out an email which contained a thank you letter we received from Lucy's guardian.  We received the promised photo, therefore in case you missed it, we wanted to share it again:

Dear Renee and POTH staff,
I wanted to thank you and your organization for your recent and past help with my girl Lucy.  As I am sure with you and everyone you work with - our pets are our children and that is never more true than with my Lucy.

At this point I am trying my absolute hardest to change and turn my life around to get back on my own two feet (and four paws)!

Your help alleviated so much stress and worry that allowed me to enter this program with a clear head, while my mom cares for my Lucy.  She (my Mom) lives on a limited fixed income and could not have afforded those charges.

My Mom says Lucy is doing better - with prayers and crossed fingers - I hope to be in a place in the future to be a donor to your much needed organization.

Thank you ever so much!
John Smith (name changed to protect privacy)

p.s. When I get out of treatment, I'll send you a photo of Lucy and myself.  Thank you again!

We were happy to be able to help  with Lucy's emergency veterinary care.  Thank you to our donors for allowing us to fulfill our mission.

Two Carson City, NV businesses have teamed up for a third consecutive year to help Pets of the Homeless.   Downtown Coin and Carpa Nevada, LLC are selling signature Portuguese olive oils and aged balsamic vinegar provided by Chef Don Pepe December 1, 2017 through January 31, 2018.

Chef Don Pepe, known around the country as, "The Paella King" decided to hold another fundraiser after he was traveling on Amtrak and stopped in Davenport, Iowa.   He saw a guy with a dog.  Chef asked him how he was doing with his dog.  He said, "my dog is alive thanks to Pets of the Homeless."

Founder, Genevieve Frederick said, "Those pets provide joy, protection, security and warmth."  "There are so many human benefits to having a pet.  Science has shown it to be mentally and physically helpful."

Dan Wilson said, "Pets are a big part of my life.  Imagine not having anything except your pet."

Thank you to Chef Don Pepe for giving the profits to Pets of the Homeless!

Visit Downtown Coin at 111 W. Telegraph St. in Carson City to support the fundraiser and purchase some signature olive oil and balsamic vinegar.  Or call 775-883-4653 for more information.

Pets of the Homeless Gives Hope
The ones the world tries to forget
Lost on the streets,
In the rains, snow and cold,
Lonely poor souls
From heaven's fold
In a world of wealth it seems
There should be no homeless scenes.
As if lepers from the past
Way too often their fate is cast
Left to wander here then there
Problems increase, burdens to bear
Downtrodden souls die on the streets
As if dust at others feet
Once loving children with hopeful dreams
Now they portray poor homeless scenes
While thousands look the other way
For downtrodden souls the angels pray
Hands touching hands one to the other
Truly we are sisters and brothers...
- J. Paul Horgan

Pets of the Homeless gives the homeless hope when their pet is hungry, ill or injured and when they do not have the resources.  We have been told on numerous occasions, "my pet helped me get back on my feet.  My pet gave me a purpose, something to live for."

A recent study was conducted in Sweden and published by CNN that if you want to live longer, get a dog.  Owning a dog could literally be saving your life.  Studies show a reduced risk for cardiovascular disease and death.  The findings also suggest increased social well-being and immune system development.  It may encourage owners to improve their social life, and that in itself will reduce their stress level.

Should you wish to make a special donation as a Christmas gift to colleagues, family or friends, let us know and we'll mail a special holiday gift card for you to give to the recipient, or mail it directly for you.  Please email us at info@petsofthehomeless.org with your gift request information.

Wishing you a holiday season full of peace, love, and joy!
