TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

JOIN US FOR MASS THIS WEEKEND

Saturday at 5:00pm

Sunday at 9:00am

Sunday at 11:00am

TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

PRACTICE OF CHARITY

Paul tells us how a person of faith behaves: "Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God." This is the faith of a person who is at peace with God. Jesus talks about the faith that is the acceptance of God's salvific action when he explains what will happen to a faithless people: "The kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that will produce its fruit." In either case, the outcome is determined as the action of God in our lives is accepted or rejected.

  • This week focus on making your daily activity - parenting, career, ministry, family life - a practice that produces the fruits of your faith, no matter how small.
  • Pray a morning offering in which you give to God the "prayers, works, joys, and sufferings" of the day, and remind yourself of this prayer throughout the day.

We are doing our best to continue to provide a safe space to worship for everyone. Click here to see current COVID safety measures.

RETURN OF THE SHARED COMMUNION CUP

This Weekend, October 7-8

The Precious Blood will return to Mass at SJV the weekend of October 7-8. It is with an abundance of caution that we have waited until this time to offer it again, and reflects the fact that, according to the CDC, “As a nation, we now find ourselves at a different point in the pandemic – with more tools and resources than ever before to better protect ourselves and our communities.” Other churches in the archdiocese began using the shared communion cup when the restriction was lifted last year, and there is no scientific evidence indicating the shared cup spreads the COVID-19 virus.

One does not need to receive Holy Communion under both species to receive the full grace of the sacrament (CCC, No. 1390). People are not required to receive and those who wish to do so are not at a greater risk because close contact does not take place.

We recognize the importance of:

  • Properly training all ministers to wipe the cup between each person.
  • Reminding parishioners that if you are immunocompromised, have respiratory symptoms, or believe you may have been exposed to covid or flu, you should refrain.

Please watch the video above from Ascension Press, The Right Way to Receive the Precious Blood of Jesus at Holy Mass.

PARTNERS IN THE GOSPEL

LISTENING SESSIONS

The proposed list of parish families has been released by the Archdiocese of Seattle.

The listening sessions have begun, and the comments from last week's groups have already been sent to the archdiocese. One thing the staff noted was a misunderstanding of what is happening in the proposed grouping – St. John Mary Vianney is not closing as a church or its ministries. The aligning as a family means that the parishioners of the two or three parishes will gather to determine how to use its combined resources – monetary, buildings, and staff. Your involvement in the next two years will determine what each parish group ends up looking like. We want to hear from you!

Please sign up to attend a listening session about the parish family proposed for SJV here, on the signup sheets in the Narthex, or by emailing the parish office at sec@sjvkirkland.org. If none of the listening session options shown work for your schedule, please check back soon as we will be adding more sessions, and at least one Zoom session.

The listening sessions will be structured along the lines of the synodal process - three main questions will be put forth:

  1. What concerns do you have about the proposed family grouping? What challenges might this grouping pose?
  2. What hopes do you have regarding the proposed family grouping? What opportunities or possibilities might this grouping offer?
  3. What additional thoughts and feedback (including proposed changes to the parish family) do you have?

All people present for the listening session will have an opportunity to speak on the questions and all comments will be given to the Archdiocese for their continued discernment. Trained facilitators will lead the sessions.

Please continue to pray for the church in Western Washington as we move through this time of transition.

Please review the Partners in the Gospel materials available to become more familiar with the overall mission of the Church, the goals of this effort, and the process we are undertaking at archseattle.org/partners.

CATHOLIC KIDS' CATECHISM CLUB

We kicked off our faith formation program this past weekend with initiation, but you can still join!

Our 3 year old’s through kindergarten kids meet downstairs in Room 6 during the 9:00am Mass. Their session begins with learning about the Mass, they hear the Gospel for the day adapted for their little ears, then do activities based on the Gospel.

Our older kids in 1st - 5th grades attend sessions on Sundays between 10:00-11:00am. We open our sessions with the proclamation of the Gospel and then do an opening challenge related to it. Kids then break off with their clubhouses to complete their challenges! They accumulate points throughout the year and the group that gets the highest number of points wins a party at Pump-It-Up at the end of the year!

For active kids, it is a wonderful way to have fun and learn about their faith at the same time. Learn more

DID YOU KNOW???

THE INTRODUCTORY RITES

Mass begins with a procession, as the ministers of the liturgy enter the worship space. The procession has a practical function. Those with particular roles to perform in the liturgy, like the presider, altar servers, readers, Eucharistic ministers, and choristers, need to get into the sacred space somehow! But, more importantly, the procession is a symbol of the gathering of the people of God around the cross of Christ. Procession is a powerful symbol of the Church on a journey to the Kingdom. Music accompanies the procession-and not just music, but the whole assembly joining in a song of praise. In the liturgy, communal singing really matters, because the simple act of singing together expresses and even reinforces the reality that we are one in Christ.

After the entrance procession, the introductory rites of the Mass unfold with four prayers. We begin with the Sign of the Cross: in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. This is a profession of faith in miniature, a reminder of who we are and in whose name we gather. The sign of the cross marks the beginning and the end of the Mass, of this time consecrated to God.

The Penitential Act which follows is a public acknowledgment of sin. When, in one of his first public interviews, Pope Francis was asked who he was, he replied, "I am a sinner. This is the most accurate definition. It is not a figure of speech, a literary genre. I am a sinner." We acknowledge our sinfulness, not so we can feel bad about ourselves, but so we can recognize our need for God. Because how can we recognize God's power if we cannot recognize our own weakness? The pattern we see at the beginning of our liturgy -sin and mercy; humanity and divinity - will be repeated many times in the course of the Mass. We acknowledge who we are so we can, as the saying goes, "let God be God."

That same pattern is reflected in the Gloria, the song of praise which is sung on Sundays (except the Sundays of Advent and Lent) as well as on Feasts and Solemnities. The Gloria is an ancient song which begins with the words of the angels to the shepherds on Christmas night: "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will." The rest of the Gloria is an ancient "riff, if you will, on those words of Scripture, a rhapsody of praise which almost exhausts the vocabulary of wonder and thanksgiving: "We praise you. We bless you. We adore you. We glorify you. We give you thanks."

Following the Gloria, the Introductory Rites of the Mass conclude with the opening prayer, called a "Collect" because it gathers or "collects" the prayers of the assembly into one. The Collect always includes a petition, an "ask" - sometimes for the community gathered, sometimes much broader: "that we may grow in understanding of the riches hidden in Christ" (First Sunday of Lent); "that the course of our world may be directed by your peaceful rule" (8th Sunday); "that... we may rise up in the light of life" (Easter Sunday). With this prayer, the Introductory Rites come to an end. The entire assembly sits to listen to the Word of God.

GALA DINNER & AUCTION

I am the Vine and you are the branches. Those who remain in me and I in them, will bear much fruit; for you can do nothing without me.“ John 15:5.

PROCUREMENT PUSH IS ON!

Many of you received a packet challenging you to procure three items from local businesses that you frequent. Frankly, not many rose to the challenge. We currently have 117 items for the auction, but we need closer to 300 in order to have a successful auction. Please consider procuring some items and turning them in by this coming Monday, October 9th. After that date, any items turned in will be kept for next year’s auction. More procurement forms and letters are available on the Welcome Table. If you have specific questions or needs regarding procurement, please reach out to Ann V.

Do you make a special dinner that you could either whip up at someone's house or deliver hot? That would be a great item. Do you have some friends that you could host a “traveling or progressive dinner” with? Maybe start with hors d’ oeuvres at one house, salad at another, main dish at another, and lovely dessert and drinks at another? Have fun with your friends and each of you get to showcase your very best dish. Maybe we can add a limo to the package to make it a very special night! Gift Certificates to restaurants are always a winner, but so are cooking classes, gardening certificates, cabins, overnight stays in a fun place, and anything fun and unusual you have enjoyed in the past. Help us bear much fruit at this auction!

Volunteers are needed in many positions to make the evening happen. Signups are in the Narthex. If you aren’t going to attend the auction, please consider helping make it run!

Buy your raffle tickets either before or after Mass this weekend near the volunteer signups. We have some great prizes this year!

Tickets for the Gala Dinner and Auction are also now available on our website or using the button below.
