Issue 6   |   Spring 2019
A NOTE FROM THE DEAN
This month, we celebrated eight staff members with more than 215 years of collective experience at UF, the majority of those years have been spent in HHP. These staff members bring the institutional knowledge who make HHP what it is today – a community that’s family.

Looking ahead, this college is growing quickly, but we’re rooted in those faculty, staff and students that have made a lasting impact before us.

I hope you’ll join me in celebrating our college and accomplishments this spring and that you consider stopping by, seeing a familiar face or meeting a new one. We have several events on the horizon, including our annual spring awards.

Go Gators!

FEATURE STORIES
2019 GATOR GIVING DAY –
Helping us advance how we live, work, and play.

We did it! The first "Stand-Up and Holler: Gator Nation Giving Day" was held on Tuesday, February 26. Gators from around the world donated to various causes across UF and in support of the College of Health & Human Performance.

TWO JOCKS, ONE GOAL:
CURE PARKINSON'S
Diagnosed with early-onset Parkinson’s 10 years ago, former college basketball coach Gary Keating participated in a research study by UF professor/researcher David Vaillancourt.

Little did Keating know that Vaillancourt coaches youth basketball in his spare time – and that the doctor would challenge him to a game of one-on-one in the O’Dome.

WE CAN HAVE CONSERVATION AND DEVELOPMENT IN THE AMAZON
Dr. Angélica Almeyda Zambrano is highlighted in a special series on people at UF working to protect our well-being and the health of the planet.

By using drones to get a bird’s-eye view of the Amazon and other key conservation areas, she’s helping sustainable tourism gain ground as an alternative to deforestation.

SPACEFLIGHT CHANGES YOUR BRAIN PATHWAYS
A study, authored by Professor Rachael Seidler and postdoctoral associate Jessica Lee in cooperation with NASA's Johnson Space Center, evaluated scans of 15 NASA astronauts.

Brain scans of astronauts before and after spaceflight show changes to their white matter in areas that control movement and process sensory information, a University of Florida study shows.

WHY TO CONSIDER TRAVELING SOLO – AND HOW TO GET STARTED
Make new friends and embrace your freedom... HHP Professor Heather Gibson shares her travel experience and tips on how to plan your own solo adventures.

As Heather Gibson sat in the airport, about to embark on a long-anticipated adventure, one thought echoed through her mind: "What the hell was I thinking?"

GATORS GOING GREATER:
MINISTER OF MARKETING MAGIC
From Gator Growl to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Alice Norsworthy, UF alum and Eric Friedheim Tourism Institute advisory board chair, connects audiences with magical experiences.

Looking back, it could be said that organizing Gator Growl was her practice run for a career of branding and promoting iconic, larger-than-life events.

REMEMBERING DOROTHY ANN "DOT" SHIELDS
We are sad to share the passing of Professor Emeritus Dorothy Ann "Dot" Shields (pictured center).

Professor Shields had a life-long commitment to helping improve how others live, work and play. She was also a pioneer in aquatics research and education, and founded an aquatics minor program during her time at HHP.

YOUR GIFT MAKES A DIFFERENCE
As we celebrate the College of Health & Human Performance 75th anniversary in 2021, Dean Michael Reid asks you to consider a planned gift that will strengthen our college's future and influence generations to come. Our goal is to reach 75 planned gifts by 2021 – we're halfway there!
