Self Denial As An Act of Love (Matthew 16: 21-28) 
 
It has been heartbreaking to watch the news out of Texas and Louisiana where thousands of people have been displaced from their homes and their lives turned upside down by hurricane Harvey. In compassionate response, hundreds of volunteers, first responders and churches have coordinated efforts to provide shelter and care, on the ground, in places like Houston.
Disasters seem to bring out the best in most of us and often provokes self-denial as an act of love where "Love is the doorway through which the human soul passes from selfishness to service and from solitude to kinship with all humankind."  (Anonymous)
Jesus told his disciples,
 
"If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it."  (v. 24-25)
 
The self-denial Jesus referred to is a call to recognize and to let go of whatever keeps us from a fuller relationship with God and each another. Jan Richardson suggests that self-denial compels us to ask ourselves, "What are the actions, what is the way of being that will leave the greatest amount of room for God's love, grace, and compassion to move in and through me?"
Several of our PCC congregations have been embodying self-denial through acts of love, grace and compassion in the followingways:
  • News of the extreme flooding in Texas from hurricane Harvey prompted questions from several PCC churches about how to support the victims. Several churches have responded with prayer and by sending checks for OGHS to the Conference Office. In addition to prayer, there are several other ways to help.The PCC Disaster Readiness and Response Team continues to provide updated information on additional needs and worship resources
  • Trinity UCC in Waynesboro has organized prayer vigils to spread love in the midst of hate messages and flyers being distributed by white supremacist groups in their area. Study materials about race and diversity are also available to engage study and conversations
  • Zion Arendtsville UCC provided much needed school supplies to Hoffman Academy (Hoffman Homes for Youth). These supplies will get the children and faculty off to a good start for the new school year
These are only a few of the ways followers of Jesus are responding to the call to "... deny themselves and take up their cross..."  The German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer asserted, "When Christ calls a man to follow him, he calls him to die."
Self-denial is a call to die to self, to begin thinking more like God and be shaped by God's heart. That which pleases God should also please us. That which hurts the heart of God should also hurt our hearts. We are God's image-bearers, created to bring glory to God in all that we do.
Jesus implores us to choose the way of the cross which is self-denial and love.

We are thankful for the generosity of our churches and members of Penn Central Conference.  In the aftermath of the devastation of Hurricane Harvey in Texas and now in Louisiana, many of you have asked how you can help and how to give.

Donate to Harvey Disaster Relief - You can send funds to the Penn Central Conference office and designate them for One Great Hour of Sharing. 100% of the funds designated for disaster relief to the United Church of Christ are used for disaster relief and rehabilitation programming.  Your funds meet immediate needs and also address the underlying causes that create those needs in the first place.  (You may also give directly to OGHS.)

Assemble CWS Kits - Put together a hygiene kit, school kit or CWS bucket.  "For families that have lost everything, CWS Emergency Cleanup Buckets and other CWS Kits are more than just relief supplies, they are an expression of love and symbol of hope for the future," said Zach Wolgemuth, UCC Disaster Ministries executive. "It's energizing to see congregations engaged in hands-on ways, reaching out to people they will likely never meet."

The Reformation at 500 and Beyond
 
Dr. Ellingwood's presentation will show how Reformation ideas about grace, faith, and works have influenced our contemporary theology, and which beliefs need to be reinterpreted or abandoned in the 21st century. Ideas about Creation held by Martin Luther, John Calvin, and other Reformers will be explored in terms of God's grace extending not only to all peoples and all nations, but also to all living creatures and all creation.

Clergy and Congregation Care Workshop
 
A congregation's expectations of clergy and church leaders are often greater than their capacity to fulfill them.  When too much focus and expectation is placed on the clergy and a few top leaders, sustainability is not possible long-term.   Scripture speaks of the leadership's role of "equipping the saints."  If clergy and church leaders have a top priority of developing others, they will use a coaching approach to continually develop the potential in other congregants, resulting in a growing pool of leaders.

Saturday, Sept. 16 from 9-Noon, Lancaster Seminary Professor of Practice Bishop Nathan D. Baxter will open to the public his course Preaching to the Public. (It is ideal for local pastors and lay leaders, but not restricted to them.)  The class will take on the topic: Relevance of Amish Grace: Spiritual Considerations and Theological Insights on Forgiveness in an Age of Moral Anger, Social Division, and Spiritual Grief.  Special guest lecturer will be Dr. Donald Kraybill, distinguished professor and senior fellow emeritus at Elizabethtown College, and author of Amish Grace: How Forgiveness Transcended Tragedy.  There will be an ecumenical response panel, open audience discussion, and small group reflection.
 
(Bishop Baxter, who was recently named Lancaster Seminary Professor of Practice, is the retired Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Central Pennsylvania and former Dean of the National Cathedral in Washington, DC. He provided pastoral counseling during 9/11.)

Lancaster Seminary opens key courses for audit
Because in ministry you never stop learning, Lancaster Seminary is opening some popular courses for audit, taught by esteemed faculty. Lee Barrett presents Knowing God, Julia O'Brien presents Gender, Sexuality and the Bible, and Greg Carey teaches Luke and Acts.
 
There also are courses just for pastors - like Ministerial Ethics - and courses for spiritual practice - like Writing as a Spiritual Practice. Texas VOAD anticipates a need for comfort/hygiene kits, cleaning products/clean-up kits, and baby/infant products.   If you have any of these items, please start coordinating with your Texas affiliate to receive these items, as Texas VOAD has begun to receive requests for these items to help support shelter operations. Please also let your Texas affiliate know that they should contact Texas VOAD (damian@onestarfoundation.org) once the supplies are available in-state so that Texas VOAD can coordinate with local emergency management officials as requests for assistance are submitted to the State Operations Center. 
 
If you have these resources available, but don't have a Texas affiliate that you are able to send them to, please email Damian Morales with Texas VOAD - damian@onestarfoundation.org  with which resource(s) you have available, the quantity available, and how soon you would be able to deploy them if needed.

Right now, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program is under an immediate, existential threat. Terminating DACA would mean turning our nation's back on immigrant youth who are valued members of our communities. To Take Action.

2 sessions of "Healthy Practices in the Third-Third: Boundary Awareness in Retirement" will be held this Fall.

This training will count toward your association's Boundary Training requirement.

Come explore topics around vocation and identity as well as look at some of the logistics of leaving well and in some cases becoming a member instead of the pastor. With much of the expertise already in the room, we anticipate lively discussion of life in real-world retirement and how we navigate the blessings and challenges of this time in our lives.

Experiment with Worship Times - NEW
One major shift (among many!) is that we are living in a culture of convenience. So many congregations are experimenting with offering more than one worship service, especially for those who now work on Sunday or just want to sleep in. Prayerfully consider offering five worship services a week and let the community tells you which one works for them. The most popular times are Saturday or Sunday around 4 or 5 and Wednesday at 6:30. If you are located in a downtown area where bars and restaurants come alive at night, try 10:00 on Saturday night.   One service per week (at 10:00 on Sunday morning) is not likely to meet the religious needs of your community.
 
Try this for six months and you may be surprised!  
 
 

Next Vitality Workshop September 24 - Hayshire, York
  Have you noticed a drop in worship attendance?
Are you wondering how to get more visitors to show up on Sunday morning?
What kinds of changes to worship can be made that will have the biggest impact ?
 
This workshop walks pastors and leaders through the process of reaching out to the community and attracting new people to attend worship. Once they are attending worship, three changes will be recommended to ensure their return . We will explore Web sites , visitor tabs and using the Smart Phone as a device for evangelism. Key learnings will be around worship days and times, how to make Holy some of the secular Holidays and how to do small groups in the middle of worship.
 
There is no cost to attend. Please read Transformative Worship: Changing Lives through Religious Experience by Laurene Beth Bowers (available on Amazon). This will prepare you to ask questions and have a conversation about how to incrementally grow your church.

Would You Like a Mystery Visitor to Come to Your Church?

The conference has trained 12 Mystery Visitors who are willing to visit your church on Sunday morning and give you a detailed report. Pastors can request a visitor (and they are the only ones allowed to do so) and they will receive the report to do with it as they see fit.

These visitors will assess the website, curb appeal and hospitality (as well as the coffee!). They will not be evaluating the pastor or the service itself. While most of the mystery visitors are churched, we also have a few seekers. To request a mystery visitor, contact Laurene Bowers   LBowers@pccucc.org

A Concert of Blessing

With a "blast from the past" and a boost into the future, we celebrate with the surrounding community the life and legacy of Faith United Church of Christ.  Various musical talents (including local church choirs, Medard's House youth, Central PA Womyn's Chorus and the River City Singers, and more) will share in the 'passing of the baton' from Faith UCC to Medard's House (www.medardshouse.org).  
 
Faith UCC will be holding its final worship service on Sunday, September 24 and we wanted to give this opportunity to celebrate the historically musical life of Faith, as well as provide an opportunity for you to join us even if you are unable to attend on Sunday.

Concert and Silent Auction to Benefit Kenya Mission Trip
Dover United Church of Christ invites you to an evening of music with Buddy King and Diane Susek on Friday, October 27. 
The concert (and accompanying silent auction) benefits the upcoming partnership 2018 People-to-People Pilgrimage to Kenya. 

The concert begins at 7:00pm.  The doors open 6 p.m.  There is a suggested donation of $5 for the concert. Silent auction items include pottery, jewelry and original artwork.  The event will take place at Dover UCC, 45 W. Canal Street, Dover, PA 17315.  Refreshments included.

The York Association will host Mr. Mark Lutz, the author of UnPoverty, at their Annual Meeting in November. 
 
In preparation for his visit, Community Outreach members have prepared a study guide for you and your congregations to use as you read this book.  Currently the Association has 30 copies of this book you can borrow.  As you make your plans for summer and fall, please contact Rev. Cathy Sherry ( CathyLHS19@comcast.net ) to reserve copies for use at your church.
