It is good to see that life is slowly getting back to normal. Schools reopening soon in California is a welcome sign for children and families. We can’t say that the pandemic is behind us, until the infection rate goes down in other countries. We have to be cautiously optimistic.
Assembly bill AB 1130 (California Health Care Quality and Affordability Act) is moving fast. It already passed the assembly and moved to the next stage. Irrespective of the specialty, this bill will impact all modes of practice, if it becomes a law. Please read the text of this bill.

I would like to welcome our new chapter members and encourage them to make use of the resources available on our website, aapca2.org
We are continuing to take volunteers to form the Advocacy Committee in our chapter to plan and improve our advocacy efforts. If you wish to take an active part in that committee, please click here to sign up, or contact Tomas at chapter2@aapca2.org.
I would like to thank the The Children and Families Commission for San Bernardino County (First 5 San Bernardino) for their continuing support of our Reach Out and Read program. The Commission approved the 2021-2022 contract on June 3rd, extending our commitment to deliver free books during well child visits to children in San Bernardino County. Please contact Staci Scranton at sscranton@aapca2.org if you are interested in participating.
Jonathan Warus, MD, FAAP, a pediatrician at Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) is featured in this month's Member Spotlight. Furthermore, we are continuing to feature the finalists of the 2021 Research Awards. This month we have Brenda Rieger, MD, a 2nd year resident at CHLA. I hope to see more of you participate and make this part of the newsletter interesting, by submitting your personal narratives to be published. Please read the submission guidelines below and contact chapter2@aapca2.org for more information.
Voting for National AAP President Elect, District IX Chairperson and Vice Chairperson will be from August 25, 2021 to September 8, 2021. Please read the candidates' bios in the elections section below.
If you missed any of the most recent webinars, you may watch the recordings by following the links provided in the Recent Events section below.
In case that you missed it last month, please be informed about the following important information:
-
Please watch THIS VIDEO to learn about the 2022 ballot initiative called FIPA (Fairness for Injured Patients Act). If this initiative were to pass, it would raise the MICRA cap to $1.2 million and tie it to inflation, create a new category of damages with essentially no definition and no award cap, and would allow a physician’s personal assets to be seized in a judgement against them. The end result of this would be significantly increased insurance premiums for Californians and decreased access to providers for MediCal patients.

How to Prevent Pediatric Drowning
By Millicent Wilson, MD
|
|
|
“Drowning is silent and only takes a minute.” Imagine that you are boarding a cruise ship docked at Port Canaveral, Florida waiting to depart. The boarding process takes several hours because the passengers, boarding in family groups, can only board during specified time slots. Suddenly, poolside, there is a pediatric full arrest.
