Dear members,
I’d like to offer congratulations to our new board of directors, and many thanks to everyone who ran for office and to our chapter members who voted in the election! Most of all, I want to express my gratitude and appreciation to Dr. Rajasekhar as he completes his term as chapter president. Under Dr. Rajasekhar’s leadership, our chapter advocated for the health, safety, and education of our children during the pandemic, produced numerous educational webinars, and supported our member pediatricians in their practices, clinics, and hospitals across the region.
|
|
In the coming two years, our chapter will rise to meet new challenges, such as the growing child mental health crisis, the formula shortage, and the protection of access to reproductive health care. While the course of the pandemic is hard to predict, I am hopeful that we will have more opportunities to meet in person and get to know one another. Whether online or in person, I look forward to hearing the ideas and feedback of every chapter member.
I would like to welcome our new chapter members and encourage them to get involved by joining a chapter committee. Information about our committees and other resources are available on our website, aapca2.org. Your support makes the work of this chapter possible!
Our member spotlight this month features Dr. Ilona Kleiner, a general pediatrician practicing at Pediatric Associates Medical Group in Sherman Oaks.
Some other highlights of this month’s newsletter include:
- Register for the upcoming two-part lactation webinar series (CME opportunity)
- Become a Health Evaluator for the Los Angeles Unified School District
- Check out national AAP’s Safe Sleep Campaign Toolkit
I hope you are all having a fantastic start to your summer!
Best wishes,
Grant Christman, MD, MAcM, FAAP

Federal Gun Safety Legislation – The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act
By Karinne Van Groningen, MD, MPH - Legislative and Policy Analyst
On June 25th President Biden signed into law the first major gun safety legislation passed by Congress in nearly 30 years. The signing of this legislation, called the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, came after a horrific string of mass shooting in Buffalo New York and Uvalde Texas. The Senate passed the legislation 65 to 33 with 15 Republicans joining all 50 Democrats to overcome the 60-vote filibuster. The House voted 234-193 to pass the bill. So, what’s in the bill, is it supported by research, and does it address the AAP’s call for gun violence prevention? Read more ...

AAP Safe Sleep Campaign - Toolkit
|
|
The leading cause of death for infants 1 month to 1 year is Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUIDs). This includes sleep related deaths and SIDS. Many of us work to make safe infant sleep the norm.
To help guide conversations about safe sleep with families, the American Academy of Pediatrics has developed a suite of materials including posters, infographics, videos and social media messages. Please download, share and post these materials. Link to HealthyChildren.org/SafeSleep in your posts. Suggested hashtag: #SafeSleep

Drowning Prevention and Water Safety - Resources

Drowning is the single-leading cause of death among children aged 1-4, and a top cause of death among teens. Pediatricians can help lower these rates by sharing valuable resources with parents and caregivers.

I attended The David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA where I conducted research on mutagenesis of neuroblastoma. That experience confirmed that I enjoyed direct patient interaction more than bench-work. I went on to do my internship and residency in Pediatrics at Cedars Sinai Medical Center. Read more...
