AAP-CA2 President

Dear fellow pediatricians and chapter members,
I would like to welcome our new chapter members and encourage them to make use of the resources available on our website, aapca2.org
It has been more than one year since the pandemic started. Increased availability and public acceptance of COVID-19 vaccine hopefully will bring back life to normalcy soon. In the meantime we still need to follow the mitigation measures to reduce the rate of infection.

Statewide advocacy for safe school reopening has been the top priority for all our AAP chapters in California. The press release on February 3rd made the headlines, with quotes from Dr. Ken Zangwill and Dr. Alice Kuo. The four chapters in our District IX joined forces for statewide advocacy on February 9th with another press release, urging “action NOW to allow kids safely back to in-person school”. Both press releases referenced the ample science supporting our statements. You may access all content in our advocacy page: https://aapca2.org/advocacy
I would like to bring to your attention that the AAP District IX Nominating Committee is seeking AAP members interested in being considered as a candidate to run for either the District Chairperson or District Vice Chairperson position. If you are interested in being considered as a potential candidate, please email your name, the position for which you would like to be considered, and a 200-word Biography to our District NNC Representative Dr. Ed Curry at curryaapca2@gmail.com,
As an AAP member, you have the opportunity to advocate for and influence national AAP policy and priorities through the resolution process. The resolution deadline for the Leadership Conference (ALF) is April 1st, 2021.
Our “American Academy of Pediatrics District IX Chapter 2” is listed as one of the not-for-profit organizations eligible to receive charitable donations under the smile.amazon.com website. Please read the information provided in this newsletter to learn more about how to sign up and choose to support our chapter. You may also encourage your family members and friends to do the same. When purchases are made through smile.amazon.com, a small donation goes to the chapter account from Amazon.
I would like to congratulate the Chair of Pediatrics at Riverside University Health System Dr. Chad Vercio, and physicians from Patterson and Tedford Pediatrics in Atascadero Dr. Laura Hutchison, and Dr. Rosa Sanchez Rosen who signed up to promote early childhood literacy through the AAP-CA2 Reach out and Read program, championing early literacy for children under the age of 5 years.
Christopher Russell, MD, MS, FAAP, a pediatrician from CHLA, is featured in this month's Member Spotlight (Thanks to our Editorial Board for the great work). He is also one of our wonderful speakers for the upcoming symposium on February 27th. I hope to see more of you participate and make this part of the newsletter interesting, by submitting your personal narratives to be published. Please read the submission guidelines below and contact chapter2@aapca2.org for more information.

What do you do before work that sets the tone for your day?
I have a 20-minute drive to work each day, so I always make sure to listen to some music that gets me energized for the day. I can't start my day without an iced coffee, so I make sure to grab one on the way to work or in the coffee cart at the hospital. Continue reading ...

Mission Statement
|
|
Our mission at AAP-CA2 is to combat discrimination by promoting justice, respect, inclusion, opportunity, and camaraderie in the medical community and the diverse populations we serve. We are committed to anti-racism. We work to eliminate disparities, prejudice, and bias in education, nutrition, healthcare, neighborhood, and society. We believe in creating, fostering, and ensuring access to a safe, nurturing environment where all children can thrive. We aim to increase the representation of physicians and other healthcare providers from marginalized, minoritized, and oppressed backgrounds within the field of pediatrics and our AAP-CA2 communities.
|
|
Congratulations to the AAP-CA2 ACEs Committee, led by Dr. Adam Schickedanz. The first two sessions (Presented by Dr. Christine Thang and Dr. Schickedanz) were very well attended. During these sessions, participants engage in rich case discussions in multiple breakout rooms. Please join us as there are still two live sessions on the calendar. You may visit the website and sign up for the upcoming sessions. Videos are uploaded to the site and anyone may claim CME credit (After watching the video and completing the evaluation form). This series is sponsored by First 5 LA through an ACEs Aware Grant.

|
As a follow-up to the Chapter-wide survey conducted in May of 2020, we are now trying to gain insight into the current situation in pediatric practices in our region as it relates to the COVID-19 pandemic, and how some things may have changed - or not. The results will help us focus on what is most important as we advocate on your behalf.
You do not have to answer all questions, just those that are most important to you.
