American Academy of Pediatrics - California Chapter 2
Grant Christman, MD, MACM, FAAP

2024 April Edition

President's Message

Please join us for the 35th annual Advances in Pediatrics Symposium this Saturday, April 27th at UCLA. Registration is now open! Our keynote address will be given by former State Senator Dr. Richard Pan, who will be discussing “Voting as a Social Determinant of Health.”

We all know that children are unable to vote because of their age. What may be less obvious is that their parents are also less likely to vote than many other demographic groups, which diminishes their ability to influence policy on their children’s behalf. Dr Pan will be addressing how this problem impacts child health and what pediatricians can do about it. His presentation will be followed by a panel of chapter leaders who will elaborate on this important topic.

The symposium program will also feature a live podcast session with Peds RAP during lunch, trainee research posters, and subscription giveaways. There will be presentations on firearm injury prevention, atopic dermatitis, crisis management, RSV, point-of-care ultrasound, and more. Join us in person or on Zoom!

The Chapter has other important events coming up in May. The next Chapter social is in Santa Barbara on May 9th at 6 PM, at 10 West Gallery. Representatives of state and local governments as well as the school board are planning to attend.  Please join us if you are in the area, and spread the word to fellow pediatricians you think might be interested.

The election for the 2024 – 26 Chapter board is also happening in May, and the nominating committee has finalized a ballot. If you attend the Symposium, you will hear more about the candidates there. Otherwise, look out for a special election e-mail early next week.

This month’s Member Spotlight features Dr. Chris Landon, a pediatrician of 43 years in Ventura County. Dr. Landon will be presenting a lecture on RSV Evolution at the upcoming Advances in Pediatrics symposium.

In the Trainees’ Corner, we have the winners of the 2024 Research Awards. Come see their presentations and posters at the Symposium this weekend.

In addition to three new fellows, a total of forty-one medical students from the various medical schools in our region indicated an interest in pediatrics and signed up as chapter members last month. I would like to welcome our new chapter members and encourage them to get involved by joining a chapter committee. Information about our committees and other resources are available on our website, aapca2.org. Your support makes the work of this chapter possible!

Save the date for the following event:

  • 4/27 – Advances in Pediatrics Symposium held at UCLA
  • 5/9 – Santa Barbara Social, 10 West Gallery

Best wishes,

Grant Christman, MD, MACM, FAAP

AHRQ Safety Program for Telemedicine: Improving Antibiotic Use

Is your pediatric practice interested in improving appropriate use of antibiotics in telemedicine?

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) is currently recruiting practices for a no-cost, 18-month program beginning in June 2024 to promote appropriate antibiotic use in telemedicine while improving patient and family satisfaction with antibiotic prescribing. Practices will learn directly from experts in infectious diseases, antibiotic prescribing, and tele-diagnosis and receive one-on-one coaching to implement sustainable improvements in the diagnosis and treatment of infectious syndromes over telemedicine, including those common in pediatrics such as otitis media. Participants will learn how to determine when an in-patient visit is needed, how to handle uncertainty in diagnosis over telemedicine, and how to communicate effectively with parents. Participating providers will be eligible for continuing education units (CEUs), continuing medical education (CME) credits, and American Board of Pediatrics maintenance of certification (MOC) points.

AAP | Research in Office Settings (PROS)

Have you had the experience of unexpectedly having a patient with a mental health crisis during a busy clinic day?

Wished there was something that could help you help the patient without necessarily sending to the emergency department?

AAP PROS is recruiting practices to participate in focus groups to give feedback on a new digital suicide prevention screening and treatment tool!

The American Academy of Pediatrics Pediatric Research in Office Settings (PROS) network is recruiting practices with 1-3 clinicians/staff to participate in a VIRTUAL focus group, and who will also refer 4-6 parents/adolescents from the practice to also participate in VIRTUAL focus groups.

All focus groups will be separate—meaning there will be one for clinicians, one for adolescents, and one for parents.

The focus groups will be hosted in late Spring (April -May).

Primary care practices that do NOT have embedded/co-located mental health services are eligible to participate, and there is a small stipend for participants for their time.
