President's Message
It’s great to see that the weather is warming up a bit and we’re getting a break from the rain. Earlier this month, I had the privilege of traveling to Washington, D.C. with other chapter members to attend the AAP Advocacy Conference.
|
|
The focus of the conference and our advocacy visits was the impact of social media on the ongoing child and adolescent mental health crisis. We discussed how particular features of social media—personal data collection, manipulative design practices, and algorithmic recommendations—put children at risk of exposure to extreme content and make it harder for them to put down their devices.
Conference attendees from all over California were able to visit with staff from our senatorial and congressional offices to discuss the AAP’s position on this important issue. For further details of the conference and the AAP’s federal advocacy priorities, check out this month’s edition of the Quorum by Dr. Kamaal Jones, Chapter 2 legislative analyst.
Registration is opening this week for the chapter Advances in Pediatrics Symposium on May 20 at UCLA. Please register and attend if you are available! We have an amazing line-up of speakers with small group breakout sessions divided into domains of interest: clinical, advocacy, and practice management. Congratulations to the medical students, residents, and fellows whose poster abstracts were selected for presentation, with a special nod to Dr. Garrity who will be our trainee oral presenter.
Congratulations also to Dr. Elizabeth Volpicelli for receiving a 2023 CATCH Resident grant for her project entitled “Rooted in Resilience”!
The next chapter social event will be held on April 21 in April 29 in Kern County. You can RSVP in the upcoming events section below. Please email Tomas at ttorices@aapca2.org if you have any ideas for an event or would like to host with the chapter’s support. Our goal is to host an in-person event in every county of the chapter by the end of the year!
I would like to welcome our new chapter members and encourage them to get involved by joining a chapter committee. Information about our committees and other resources are available on our website, aapca2.org. Your support makes the work of this chapter possible!

“Everybody Deserves Healthcare”
No Child is an Island
Medical bills bankrupted mom & dad. So, 5-year-old Mason became homeless.
Financing is upstream from virtually everything in pediatrics and in healthcare. This presentation explores how and why our healthcare financing system is broken…harming children, families, pediatricians and our entire society…and how we can make universal and better.
|
|
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- To better understand the inadequacies of, and downstream harms caused by, our current healthcare financing system.
- To better understand how universal, affordable, equitable healthcare can be achieved through a unified system of public financing.
