Marine to Marshal: WWII Vet to Lead 2023 Fourth of July Parade

Parade organizers named 94-year-old Marine veteran James “Jim” Rogers as grand marshal for the 2023 Peachtree City Fourth of July Parade.

Rogers served in World War II, the Korean War, and multiple tours in Vietnam. During his service to our country, Rogers received multiple medals including the World War II Victory medal, United Nations Service medal, and the Bronze Star. He is currently a Life Member of Peachtree City’s Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9949.

“Jim’s fellow VFW members nominated him for this honor,” Parade Director Maria Puckett said. “We are thrilled at the opportunity to honor him and his service to our country.”

Rogers will lead over 100 registered parade units down South Peachtree Parkway as part of this year’s Independence Day celebrations.

Peachtree City’s Fourth of July parade started in 1973 as the brainchild of Sallie Satterthwaite. 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of the parade’s founding. It’s grown from a small gathering of participants to a yearly event that attracts more than 10,000 people.

The parade steps off at 9AM at the intersection of Pinehurst Drive and Peachtree Parkway. It winds down Peachtree Parkway for 1.8 miles before turning left onto McIntosh Trail where it ends at the McIntosh Trail Recreation Complex.

A panel of three judges award trophies to parade participants in several categories, including the Mayor's Trophy, Most Creative, Most Patriotic, Grand Marshal Trophy, and the top three spots for golf cart entries.

The Peachtree City July 4th Parade is not only a celebration of the nation's independence but also a celebration of the community, bringing together residents and businesses from both Peachtree City and Fayette County to honor this special day. With its 50th anniversary, this year's parade promises to be a milestone event that people won't want to miss.

How to Celebrate Responsibly and Keep the Fourth of July Spectacularly Safe

Celebrating the Fourth of July with dazzling fireworks remains a popular tradition for many.  The sale and use of consumer fireworks is legal in Georgia, but there are some rules that everyone must follow before lighting up the night sky.

Fireworks cannot be sold to anyone under the age of 18.

State law allows the use of consumer fireworks between 10AM and 11:59PM on July 3rd and July 4th, Labor Day, Memorial Day weekend, and New Year's Eve, and until 1AM on New Year's Day. Fireworks cannot be used past 9PM on any other day.

Using fireworks on any city property (including parks, historic sites, and recreation areas) is not allowed without a special use permit.

Setting off fireworks indoors or within the right of way of a public road, street, highway, or railroad is prohibited. It is also illegal to set off fireworks within 100 yards of a gas station, hospital, nuring home or other health care facility, jail, or prison.

Don't drink or do drugs while using fireworks.

Here are some tips on fireworks safety from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission:

Stay safe and have a happy 4th!

Flat Creek Boardwalk: Share Your Thoughts

Earlier this year, strong winds toppled trees in the Flat Creek Nature Area, destroying a section of the southern boardwalk.

The boardwalk remains closed due to concerns that other trees weakened by the storm may fall.

City Council is considering ways to repair & reopen the boardwalk. We want to hear from you on how we make the Flat Creek Nature Area safe for all.
