ST. LUKE'S RECEIVES GRANT TO IMPROVE SCHOOL SAFETY

St. Luke's Episcopal School was recently awarded a generous grant from the J.L. Bedsole Foundation to improve school safety. This grant will allow us to better monitor and manage entry and exit of the Upper campus through automation of the South Gate.  In addition, a keypad will be installed on the Admin gate, similar to the one on the Lower School campus.

Classroom locks on the Lower Campus were recently upgraded and additional security cameras are scheduled for Japonica, as well.

We are grateful for the support of the J.L. Bedsole Foundation and others to be able to protect better St. Luke’s students, faculty and staff, and families. A safer campus is a successful one!

ST. LUKE'S RECEIVES INCENTIVE FOR STATE OF ALABAMA STEM ECOSYSTEMS INITIATIVE

St. Luke’s Episcopal School has been selected as the anchor institution for the State of Alabama STEM Ecosystems Initiative! As leaders in the K-12 educational arena, we are tasked with helping shape the future of STEM(M) education and workforce development for nine counties. These are Mobile, Baldwin, Choctaw, Clarke, Conecuh, Monroe, Washington, and Wilcox. Our proven Biomedical Sciences Program, newly implemented Project Lead The Way (PLTW) offerings, and dedication to community engagement led to St. Luke’s being the only private K-12 school in the state and the ONLY school in these 9 counties selected. As we continue to grow and expand our own STEM(M) partnerships, we are honored to serve as a model for southeast Alabama.

The $50,000 incentive that has been awarded to us is the first of multiple grant opportunities for this initiative. To learn more about our role and how you or your business can partner with St. Luke’s, contact Racheal Banks at rbanks@slesmobile.org or Diane McCleery at dmccleery@slesmobile.org.

STEM(M) AT ST. LUKE'S

Featuring: Mrs. Tigner attends Project Lead the Way Conference

"I had the pleasure of attending the PLTW Launch Conference in St. Louis, Missouri at the end of January. I met with over 450 STEM educators like myself from all over the United States. I was able to learn more about the 43 modules that are offered for PLTW Launch. PLTW Launch is designed for Prek-5th grade students. Launch taps into students’ exploratory nature, engages them in learning that feels like play, and encourages them to keep discovering – now and for any future they choose. It was refreshing to meet educators from all over and engage with them about PLTW Launch. A few guest speakers I had the pleasure of listening to were Marisa Wolksy and Ron Clark. Marisa Wolksy is the PBS kids Producer of Work It Out Wombats, a TV show geared towards young learners that introduces them to a creative way of thinking that helps them solve problems and complete tasks in a more organized way. Ron Clark is known to many as “America's Educator,” Ron Clark is the 2000 Disney American Teacher of the Year, a two-time New York Times Bestselling author, the subject of a television movie and the founder of The Ron Clark Academy. I am thankful for the opportunity I was given to learn more about PLTW Launch and how it will continue to grow for the years to come."

ST. LUKE'S CELEBRATES GRANDPARENTS DAY & MARDI GRAS

St. Luke's knows how to celebrate our grandparents and Mardi Gras!

Our Japonica campus LOVED celebrating Grandparents Day by showing off their hard work and musical talent! It was our way to honor our wonderful grandparents/grandfriends and the perfect opportunity to show them LOVE!

The University Campus students enjoyed treating their loved ones to lunch.

Thanks to all who were able to celebrate with us! For those who couldn't make it this year, you were definitely in our hearts, and there will be many more opportunities to see you soon!

ST. LUKE'S ABROAD 2024

SMALL SCHOOL. BIG OPPORTUNITIES.

St. Luke's toured the best of Italy during Mardi Gras Break! This group of 10th, 11th and 12th graders traveled to Florence to see Palazzo Vecchio, Piazza della Signoria, Chiesa di Santa Croce, Ponte Vecchio, Duomo, a leather workshop, Gates of Paradise, Giotto's Bell Tower, Baptistery visit, leaning Tower of Pisa, and Dante's House. In Venice, the group enjoyed the Romeo and Juliet balcony, Verona Arena, St. Mark's Square, St. Mark's Basilica, Doge's Palace, a glass-blowing demonstration, and a Gondola ride. In Assisi, the group visited St. Francis of Assisi Basilica. When in Rome, our students toured the Colosseum, Forum Romanum, Piazza Venezia, Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, St. Peter's Basilica, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, and Piazza Navona. After traveling to Sorrento, the group watched a cameo workshop and took a Pompeii-guided excursion. The trip ended with a Capri and Blue Grotto excursion.

The trip was an excellent learning experience as our students experienced firsthand the fantastic art, culture, and history of Italy like no history book can cover!

SECOND GRADE EXPLORES THE WONDERS OF OOBLEK

It’s a solid. It’s a liquid. It’s Ooblek! Ooblek is very fascinating, and our second graders' hands were covered in it, happily making a fun mess! Ooblek acts like a liquid when being poured, but like a solid when a force is acting on it. Students enjoyed observing liquids/solids, pressure/force, and color mixing!

MRS. HAYNES' PHYSICS CLASSES EXPLORE NEWTON'S LAWS

Each year, our Physics classes study Newton's Laws and how they apply to bridges and bridge design. The students learn about the different types of bridge forces, design a bridge, and then build the bridge out of popsicle sticks. When they are complete, students test their strength by placing weight on the bridges until they collapse. This year's winning bridge, built by Ethan Bowie, Ethan Watts, and Thomas Hardy, held 345 pounds!

MRS. KIM'S K2 CLASS HAS A SPECIAL VISITOR

Before Mardi Gras break, Wilkes, the Inca Duck, visited Mrs. Kim's and Mrs. Carmen's K2 class. While visiting, he assisted Mrs. Sandy with her duties and also went to chapel and helped lead songs with our music teacher, Mr. D and our chaplain, Mary Alice. Unfortunately, Wilkes was sent to the principal's office for quaking too loudly in class and received a phone call back to the pond. Next, he visited the library to help Mrs. Tillman use a storyboard and read stories. Lastly, Wilkes enjoyed the playground, ate lunch, and finally took a well-deserved nap!
