Positively Speaking: Patricia's Perspective

Simple Ways to Reduce Stress in the Summer
As much as the Summer is for leisure, sometimes stress gets the best of us, especially in today’s uncertain world. There is so much uncertainty right now in the areas of politics, the economy, climate change, racial tension, and most recently school shootings and the war in Ukraine. Whenever there is uncertainty it is always followed by anxiety. It's the way our brain is wired. We are wired to be planners. So during this time when we are all so susceptible to feeling anxiety, it's especially important to look at our stress levels and find ways to slow down, relax and enjoy life.

Here are some ways to reduce stress. Move, laugh, and count your blessings. Doing these three simple things can improve your quality of life daily. Moving rids the body of tension and it releases a chemical in our brains called dopamine. Dopamine is a reward system in our brains that keeps us happy and motivated! Exercising increases dopamine levels. Second, laughter suppresses the stress-related hormones in the brain, and activates the immune system! When you count your blessings, it helps us not only appreciate everything around us and all the good in our lives as well as ourselves.
Another stress reducer is pampering, We often think of the word pampering as self -indulgent and I feel that is a misconception. Pampering yourself is a part of self-care. Examples are a massage, facial, hot baths, long walks in nature, sitting on the beach with a cold drink and a good book, watching a feel-good movie on the couch with a blanket, or even giving a friend or family member a call. These can rejuvenate you and restore balance in your life.

It’s all about "filling up your cup” so you can share what’s “in your glass.”
