OUR MISSION:

To Enrich the Health and Lives

of the People We Serve

CHCS Through a Patient's Eyes

Joe Harder, a lifelong Onaga resident and owner of the Onaga Herald newspaper, recently reflected on his hospital stay at CHCS. He had many kind words to share in his editorial dated February 8, 2024.

He recalled how, "everyone had their best intentions" and he "knew he was in the right place." He was so appreciative of Dr. Cancelada for his expert surgical care and for not transferring him to Topeka as he desperately wanted to remain in Onaga.

He expressed his gratefulness, "that the people in Onaga are the best at their job," and expressed thanks for the nursing staff for their excellent care. Even Fo who insisted on waking him up daily at 6am to take his vitals." Lastly, Joe remarked he knows he has the best home care possible with our HomeHealth staff.

Everyone involved with Joe's care should be commended for extending him incomparable, compassionate care and for reminding each of us to live the CHCS mission. This is what rural health care looks like.

One in 23 men and 1 in 25 women will be diagnosed with colorectal (colon or rectal) cancer in their lifetime. It affects men and women of all racial and ethnic groups and is most often found in people 50 years or older.

Incidence in those younger than 50, or young-onset colorectal cancer, is on the rise. Among those under age 55, the incidence rate is increasing by 1.5% every year. According to the latest data, colorectal cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among men aged 20–49 years.

Colorectal cancer is preventable. Get screened for colorectal cancer. It could save your life!

No matter your age or health status, regular screenings are important. The CHCS Health Fair is a great opportunity to get low-cost labs to help screen for problems.

  • For $30, you'll receive a complete blood count, chemistry panel, thyroid screen, cholesterol panel, and hemoglobin A1c diabetes screening.
  • A prostate specific antigen, or PSA, test can be added for $15 ($45 total)

We have the obligation to protect the privacy of all patients, including our associates.

That being said, CHCS associates should never access their own medical records, or the records of any of their family members that they do not have a business purpose for accessing.

If you need access to any information in your medical record, you can complete a Release of Information form and provide to it to our Health Information Management department. You can also register for our Patient Portal to access your medical chart or information.
