Bill Protecting Minors from Gender Transition Procedures Amended and Passed by House
On Wednesday, the Florida House took up SB 254 (Yarborough). This legislation would prohibit physicians from performing gender transition procedures on minors, require written consent to be obtained before such procedures could be performed on adults, and require that a physician's license be revoked if he or she proceeds with prohibited interventions.

An amendment introduced by the House bill sponsor, Representative Fine, was adopted and the amended bill was approved by an 82-31 vote. The amendment expands the ban to current patients, allowing until the end of the year for minors to discontinue transition interventions. In addition, other changes approved by the House would ban health insurance policies from covering transition-related medical expenses, and would prohibit an individual from changing the sex recorded on his or her birth certificate. The amended bill must return to the Senate in order to achieve final passage.

Legislature Passes Bill to Shield Children from Obscene Performances
On Wednesday, legislation that would prohibit children from being admitted to lewd and sexually explicit adult live performances received final passage in the House by an 82-32 vote. SB 1438 (Yarborough) contains provisions to fine, suspend, or revoke the license of any public lodging or public food service establishment that knowingly admits a child to an obscene adult live performance.

The protection of minors from lewd and sexually explicit materials and performances is of the utmost importance for any civilized society. SB 1438 further enshrines this important principle in Florida law. The legislation will now be sent to Governor Ron DeSantis for his signature.
