It was the first full week of March so what better time for “Parx Madness?’’
Seven $100,000 stakes Monday and Tuesday named after local landmarks, starter allowances honoring local colleges and with a number of prominent basketball coaches, players and graduates as trophy presenters on Wednesday.
Perfect weather Monday, a bit chilly on Tuesday, rainy and cold Wednesday.
The three stakes Monday went off perfectly. After a backstretch quarantine was announced, 17 of the 37 horses in the four Tuesday stakes were scratched because, once on the grounds, horses were not able to leave until the problems that caused the quarantine can be isolated. Good races Wednesday and a record $505,292.94 Philly Big 5 carryover jackpot that was sure to attract major play because of a mandatory distribution, attracted $2,527,400 in handle, making the three-day total handle just more than $12 million.
Parx Madness indeed....

Outreach is an important part of the PTHA's Turning for Home's mission. After a two-year struggle, it was nice to get out amongst thousands of horse enthusiasts from all backrounds to share the love for our Thoroughbreds. TFH led the Thoroughbred Parade of Breeds on all four days with our Partner Farms TRRAC at Maui Meadow and Another Spin at Chica's Ranch.
Hannah Freeman demonstrated the promise of her baby Downtown Doc Brown whom she is pointing for the 2022 RRP Makeover. Recently retired Bill's Mafia stole the show in our clinic on restarting OTTBs and found a perfect home as a result of the coverage with Carleigh Fedorka in KY. Four-year-old Sweetly Talented represented in the Extreme Trail Competition, conquering every obstacle, and a Thoroughbred ridden by Lindsey Partridge, Elysia, won the competition, proving again that Thoroughbreds really compete at the upper levels of any equine sport. Spurring on the excitement in the Large Arena at the Harrisburg Farm Show Complex was twelve-year-old Addyson S. on her NBHA and T.I.P. Champion barrel horse, Girl Crush. Never to be overlooked, Briter Stable's Sulley's Boo displayed the work ethic and bravery over fences that make OTTBs so desirable in the Eventing world. We thank everyone who supports TFH in the mission to find safe second careers for our amazing retiring racehorses.

Archives Create Valuable Space for Magazine

Published: March 2022
Written by Joe Clancy
Consider this a warning. Reading this column could be dangerous to your productivity. It might also be good for your soul.
In a process begun seven or eight years ago, every edition of Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred magazine and its predecessor The Maryland Horse is available online at archive.org. The 1,043 (and counting) magazine editions are searchable and sortable and – in short – treasures of history, information and entertainment. I’ve known this chest of treasures was there, but dove in fully while researching the exploits of Broad Brush, Deputed Testamony and others for an article in this magazine.
And nearly lost myself.
There is so much stuff – articles, columns, photography, advertisements, letters to the editor, strong opinions, gentle essays, legends equine and human, bygone places and eras.
