Story of the month

There is an increasing realization of the opportunities to fundamentally shift development models to foster a prosperous, more inclusive and secure world. A range of new policy measures, market instruments and financing models are available that can protect against climate change and restore ecosystems, which supply the services underpinning development, while offering new growth paradigms, and creating new job opportunities.

The energy was high in the room as Mrs. Patricia Appiagye, Ghana's Deputy Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation  crowned the gathering assembled to celebrate the inclusion of Climate Change and Green Economy into the National School Curricula. Young children in Ghana will be aware of climate change and green economy concepts as they go through school.

On 24 August 2017, Acting Head of the PAGE Secretariat, Asad Naqvi, moderated a virtual meeting on the position of PAGE as a contributor to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) . The virtual included presentations from representatives from Mongolia and Peru to showcase experiences with mapping the SDGs across national development plans. The meeting was attended by national coordinators from Mongolia, Ghana, Peru and South Africa, as well as stakeholders from across the PAGE community.
PAGE today has released a key tool for policymakers, analysts and other stakeholders for understanding how green economy is progressing. PAGE developed the Green Economy Progress (GEP) Measurement Framework to help countries evaluate their overall progress towards an Inclusive Green Economy and to enable cross-country comparison of progress. 
Country Updates
PAGE attended the Global Snow Leopard Forum in Kyrgyz Republic to introduce the partnership to policymakers, potential funders, civil society, academia, and the private sector; and to promote PAGE's work at the national level in Kyrgyz Republic and among other PAGE countries.

To enhance inter-ministerial coordination for green economy goals in Ghana, the National Steering Committee reconvened to further conceptualize the priorities for PAGE support in 2017, including the mainstreaming of inclusive green economy in development planning for Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), green industrial policy reform, green finance reform, and foundational green economy learning.

Technical Workshop:  S ustainable
trade and value chain management in the Textile Industry
12-13 September 2017, Suzhou, China

The textile industry is one of the pillar industries in Jiangsu and has been playing an important role in Jiangsu's economy, exports, industrial upgrading, as well as its transition to an Inclusive Green Economy. The Development Plan for the Textile Industry in Jiangsu released in 2016 outlined main objects and focus areas for development of textile industry. It highlighted the importance of green and sustainable development of the textile industry and the opportunities arising from upgrading export structure while moving up along the global value chains.
Conference of the Parties (COP 23) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) 
6-17 November 2017, Bonn, Germany

The 23rd session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 23) to the UN Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) will be organized by Fiji and hosted at the headquarters of the UNFCCC Secretariat in Bonn, Germany.  The ultimate objective of the conference is to continue stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that will prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system.

Fifth Green Growth Knowledge Platform Annual Conference
27-28 November 2017, Washington DC, USA

The Fifth Green Growth Knowledge Platform (GGKP) Annual Conference will be hosted by the World Bank on the topic of sustainable infrastructure.  This two-day conference aims to take stock of recent advances and research challenges in green growth infrastructure and will feature some of the best researchers in the field, both from the academic world and from more policy-oriented backgrounds, in order to exchange key ideas and insights.

UN Environment Assembly
4-6 December 2017, Nairobi, Kenya

The UN Environment Assembly, the world's highest-level decision-making body on the environment, will gather in Nairobi, Kenya under the overarching theme of pollution.  This year's Assembly will be  sustainable and climate-neutral , and it will feature  side events  that confront pollution in its various forms. The Assembly aims to deliver a number of tangible commitments to end the pollution of our air, land, waterways, and oceans, and to safely manage our chemicals and waste.

The Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE) seeks to put sustainability at the heart of economic policy and practice.

The Partnership supports nations and regions in reframing economic policies and practices around sustainability to foster economic growth, create income and jobs, reduce poverty and inequality, and strengthen the ecological foundations of their economies.

PAGE is a direct response to the Rio+20 Declaration,  The Future We Want, which called upon the United Nations System and the international community to provide assistance to interested countries in developing, adopting, and implementing green economy policies and strategies.

Bringing together the expertise of five UN agencies - UN Environment, ILO, UNIDO, UNDP, and UNITAR - and working closely with national governments, PAGE offers a comprehensive and coordinated package of technical assistance and capacity building services. 
 
PAGE represents a mechanism to coordinate UN action on green economy and to assist countries in achieving and monitoring the emerging Sustainable Development Goals.
