Trauma-Informed Care for Women Veterans
The number of women in the military - both active duty and veteran populations - is growing rapidly. They face unusual challenges because many have multiple duties, sometimes serving as the breadwinner, parent, spouse, and soldier. Often their return to civilian life is difficult. An estimated 75,609 veterans are homeless, sheltered or unsheltered, on any given night.
Book: Not a Crime to be Poor
Spotlight recently spoke with Peter Edelman, law professor and director of the Center on Poverty and Inequality at Georgetown University, about his new book, Not a Crime to Be Poor . The book examines how the nation's criminal justice system has been structured to criminalize many aspects of poverty. "We've become a very punitive society, and this is especially evident in the way we treat the poor," Edelman says. "We need to seriously tackle the problem of deep poverty." Edelman goes on to discuss the criminal justice system and poverty at length.
