Moses continues reviewing events of the last 40 years in this week's powerful Torah portion, Eikev: Devarim (Deuteronomy) 7:12 - 11:25. The portion features many fundamental components of Torah based, life affirming Judaism. Modern Jewish culture has dispensed with many of these essential elements, resulting in perilous conditions for Jews everywhere. Indeed, all of humanity faces many perilous dangers as legal codes around the world once grounded in Torah based, life affirming Judaism now promote unholiness and immorality in policy and law.
In Eikev, God promises His loving protection, His blessings for fertility, guaranteed Jewish posterity and safety. In return, God requires that we fulfill His vision of a Heaven on earth by showing mercy as He shows mercy, to be kind as He is kind, to love Him and to serve Him completely and unconditionally, and for our own benefit to keep His laws and commandments.
Moses intervenes on behalf of the Jewish people many times during the preceding 40 years to soften God's wrath over egregious offenses to His authority and assistance. Moses reminds the people of these pivotal times. He warns them that in the Land of Israel he will not be available to intervene on their behalf. Abandoning Torah and relapsing into intellectual pride, military self sufficiency, secular humanism, materialism, ingratitude and immorality will pose existential threats from which the only salvation will be taking responsibility and repenting.
Our Haftarah this week, Isaiah 49:14 - 51:3, describes a time in Jewish history when the people of Zion accuse God of abandoning them to certain obliteration by foreign powers. The prophet explains that the people have abandoned God by dispensing with morality, a lifestyle attitude that obstructs God's presence. King Hezekiah inherits serious religious, cultural, and international problems as a result. He asserts national independence, changes that provoke an Assyrian siege of Jerusalem. Isaiah encourages him to repent for his nation's adoption of idol worship and child sacrifice. The King does, and the siege of Jerusalem ends miraculously with an overnight catastrophic death event of Assyrian forces surrounding the city.
This week I attended a conference call hosted by the National Faith Advisory Board (NFAB). The NFAB welcomes Jewish membership and several years ago reached out to us to invite our participation. This call featured Senator Marsha Blackburn, who spoke on congressional efforts to counter attacks on women and children from government transgender programs. She also spoke of the upcoming anniversary of October 7th, the rising anti-semitism in America, and support of Israel. Senator Blackburn mentioned that while in Israel she met with Prime Minister Netanyahu about American support for Israel.
Rabbi Tuly Weisz of Israel 365 and Rabbi Pinchas Taylor also spoke about these topics and prayed about them, as well. The rabbis' reports mentioned the terrible hostage experiences and current military operations and circumstances in Israel. They appealed to American Christians to defend and support Jews in America and Israel. These three speakers care about Jews and want to help Israel, and yet not one mentioned the legal, ongoing slaughter of Jewish babies in the womb in Israel and expanded government funded access to this modern day child sacrifice in the Holy Land.
Estimates of the numbers of abortions (torture and killing babies in the womb) in Israel defy common sense and imagination, especially in a time when every Jewish life matters.

Without acknowledging Jewish abortion in Israel, American support of the Jewish state and prayers to HaShem for victory in war and for Jewish survival lack honesty, integrity and accountability. Until this serious desecration of life is addressed and resolved, the ongoing existence of the Land of Israel is doubtful. As the parsha clearly states, Jewish survival depends on obedience to God's guidelines for LIVING, for MERCY and for KINDNESS. Forgetting these priorities obstructs Divine help and protection.
Neither Moses nor Isaiah is available to intervene or coach, but we can save ourselves and humanity by acknowledging this and other human rights abuses within our communities, then taking responsibility and repenting by restoring moral principles in policy and law.
Then we can expect miracles!
Please contact Senator Blackburn and Rabbis Weisz and Taylor to encourage them to speak openly about stopping Jewish abortion in Israel. Their leadership is vital and they will be blessed.
