Park View Island Water Quality

Sampling begins this week

Project Overview

This message is a follow-up to the advisory sent on Monday, July 15 regarding the post- study being conducted by the University of Miami (UM) team led by Dr. Helena Solo-Gabriele as one part of the overall Park View Canal improvements projects to improve water quality.

The City continues to prioritize improvements to the infrastructure and the above-ground sanitation in the proximity of Park View Canal and is planning future upgrades using the approved funding in the Fiscal Year 2023 - 2024 budget. As part of this current budget, $500,000 was approved for dredging design and permitting; the goal of the project is to improve water quality within the waterway. What's Happening

UM researchers completed marking the locations for the groundwater sampling event that is expected to begin this week. The groundwater samples will be collected through a process called direct push technology by JAEE Environmental Services, Inc. There are 31 potential sampling sites between 77 street and 72 street from Park View Island to Collins Avenue (see map). The groundwater sampling will take approximately 3 days and will include measuring underground utilities and marking appropriate sampling sites with spray paint. Once marked, a truck with a small drill rig, along with a crew of approximately four people, will stop at each sampling site for about 45 minutes to drill a small hole for the groundwater sample to be collected from. Expect some hammering noise to be heard as the drill rig digs a small well into the ground. After the sample is collected, the well hole will be covered.

What to Expect:

  • JAEE Environmental Services, Inc. trucks with a drill rig creating temporary wells in the ground to collect groundwater samples. Loud noise is expected for brief intervals at the beginning of each site sampling event.
  • UM research groups collecting groundwater samples.
  • Public Works Operations vehicles with attenuator trailer assisting with MOT will accompany the sampling team
