ABOUT THE FILM
THE PLOT Based on the lauded Rodgers and Hammerstein stage musical, CAROUSEL follows the romance of Billy Bigelow (Gordon MacRae), a charming carousel barker, and Julie Jordan (Shirley Jones), a pretty worker from a nearby mill.

When the attractive young couple gets married, they also both find themselves u nemployed, which puts a strain on their relationship. When Billy finds out that Julie is pregnant, he resorts to extreme measures to get money, a decision that leads to tragedy.

The film contains what many critics consider some of Rodgers and Hammerstein's most beautiful songs, including "If I Loved You."June is Bustin' Out All Over," and "You'll Never Walk Alone."

FILM TRIVIA:
* Frank Sinatra walked away from the lead role (that eventually went to MacRae) right before filming began.  It was rumored he rushed off to Africa to the set of Mogambo after a phone call from then girlfriend Ava Gardner.  Shirley Jones later revealed that Gardner told him if he didn't fly to her immediately, she was going to have an affair with co-star Clark Gable.

* Two songs from the original Broadway score--"You're a Queer One, Julie Jordan," and "Blow High, Blow Low," were recorded but do not appear in the final film..

* Shirley Jones was only 4 years older than the actress who plays her 15 year old daughter.

* Judy Garland, who was fresh from A Star Is Born (1954), was considered for the role of Julie Jordan, although that never materialized.
