Paramedic's Journey from Addiction to Advocacy

Cabarrus County EMS’ Joey Steele battled addiction for years before becoming a paramedic. Now, he’s sharing his powerful story to highlight the need for compassion for those who still struggle. Steele, who recently earned the EMS Annual Service Award, sat down to talk about his journey to recovery and how his past helps him serve residents.

Steele is a backup with the Community Paramedic MAT program, which offers free peer support, paramedic service and advanced medical care while linking participants with recovery support programs.

Hear Joey’s story in the video below:

The MAT program offers:

• Daily service from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

• Temporary administration of M.O.U.D. / Suboxone (until prescription is obtained)

💦 Water safety

Teach children how to swim. Enroll them in swim lessons when they are ready – consider their age, development and how often they are around water.

🌞 Heatstroke prevention

Avoid heatstroke-related injury and death by never leaving a child alone in a car. Keep a stuffed animal or other memento in your child’s car seat when it’s empty, and move it to the front seat as a visual reminder when your child is in the back seat. Or place your phone, briefcase or purse in the backseat when traveling with your child.
