From Mrs. Kunze

It is hard to believe that it is December already and we are discussing the end of the first semester. I want to remind everyone that quarter 1 and quarter 2 grades are averaged to calculate the semester grade to award 1/2 credit in courses, excluding courses with a State EOC - Algebra, Geometry, Biology, & US History. After this first semester, gpa calculations will be run for sports and for final senior class rank determining val and sal. Students below a 2.0 will not be allowed to continue playing their winter sport or try-out for a spring sport. There are no longer any district semester exams; however, teachers will administer their final summative for the quarter the last week and a half of school, so it is extremely important that students are in attendance.

Thu, Dec 14 (Green) & Fri, Dec 15 (Gold)– Science, English & World Language

Mon, Dec 18th (Green) & Tue, Dec 19th (Gold) – Math, Social Studies & electives, if giving a paper/pencil summative.

Wed, Dec 20th w/EXCEL – Students will receive test scores and be provided remediation if needed.

Thu, Dec 21st – 2:50pm holiday release, so Wed bell schedule w/EXCEL. Retakes need to occur during class time.

Remediation for 7th will need to occur during EXCEL on Wed, Dec 20th.

Retakes for 7th will need to occur during EXCEL on Thu, Dec 21st.

Virtual Course update

If your child is currently taking a virtual course, they MUST have the course completed by January 4th for the course grade to be calculated into their semester GPA. The cumulative GPA after 1st semester of senior year determines final class rank and is used to issue graduation honor cords.

College Board Accommodations for SAT & AP Exams

Students with a disability may be eligible for testing accommodations through College Board for the PSAT, SAT and AP Exams. Your child’s IEP or 504 Plan does not guarantee approval of accommodations for these college entrance exams. The final decision is up to College Board.

To request accommodations for your student, the College Board’s “Consent Form for Accommodations Request” must be signed by both the student and parent and returned to school. Once the consent form is received, we will start the application process. For additional information about accommodations on the PSAT, SAT and AP, visit the College Board website, www.collegeboard.com/ssd, or call them at 212-713-8333.

If you are interested in applying for College Board accommodations, please fill out the Consent Form for Accommodations Request and return it to Ms Messenger in PH 225 or email by Monday, December 4th  if your student will be taking an AP Exam in May.  If you have questions, please e-mail me at Cynthia.Messenger@stjohns.k12.fl.us.

Digital Design Student Shows Off Skills In Published Book

One of Nease’s very own Digital Design students, Communications Academy senior Savannah Preik, is now a published designer! Savannah teamed up with her mom, who is an author and chef, and they created a published cookbook. While mom created the delicious recipes, Savannah used the skills she learned in the Communications Academy to design the page layout and create gorgeous drawings throughout the book.

As mom stated in her dedication, “I thank my talented and creative daughter for all her artistry and aesthetics. She made this book come to life, and I will be forever grateful that we completed this project together!” We, too, are in awe of Savannah and wanted to give her a shout out and show our support of her impressive Digital Design endeavors outside of the classroom!

You can check out their cookbook on Amazon: https://a.co/d/bv3oP7C

Nease Academy Students See the Sweet Side of Engineering

Stellar Academy of Engineering introductory-level students had the opportunity to see the power of engineering an unlikely place — a candy store. Nease students toured Whetstones Chocolate Factory — an institution in the Nation’s Oldest City — and learned the company’s founder, Henry Whetstone, was an engineer.  During his time in the chocolate business, Whetstone patented equipment and techniques associated with his confectionary creations. The students, who have learned about mechanical engineering and “process” in class, had the opportunity to see a small factory setting, which really reinforced that curriculum.  The students also had the chance to sample several chocolates, which made this field trip even sweeter.

Academy Juniors Will Begin The Summer Internship Application Process Next Semester

Juniors in the Communications, Hospitality, and Engineering Academy programs are eligible to take part in the Career Academy Summer Internship program. This program includes students applying for internships and interviewing with local businesses offering opportunities in the summer of 2024. Parents, if you’re interested in learning more about Academy internships, you can join an upcoming Teams meeting led by the Career and Technical Education District Office Team.

Applications for the Citi Women In IT one-week summer internship are now available!

This is a one-week internship for female-identifying students who are 16 years or older as of June 1, 2024. Students do not have to be 16 at the time of application. This internship is seeking candidates who are passionate about pursuing a technology-based career.

There are two steps to apply: 1. Fill out a survey with your info (QR code to survey link is on the flyer) 2. Submit an essay by attaching it to an email and emailing the email address as seen on the flyer.

Those accepted into the one-week internship will have opportunities in the future to apply to our WIT 6-week high school and/or the WIT 10-week college program. Many past WIT one-weekers go into one or both and then move on to other internships at Citi and even full-time roles! It is a great opportunity, but it all starts with applying to the one-week internship. Students do not have to be in an Academy to apply. This is an in-person internship, so students must be able to attend on-site at the Citi campus off of Old. St. Augustine Rd, near Baptist South (address in flyer). Please see flyer for full details of eligibility.

Fidelity Scholars Program

The Fidelity Scholars program is open to underrepresented collegiate populations and serves students living in a select number of states, including Florida. To be eligible for the Fidelity Scholars Program, all applicants must live and plan to attend a college or university in their home states of MA, NC, TX, FL, NM , and NJ, and Washington, D.C. Last year, the Fidelity Scholars Program awarded 200 Scholars with more than $2.8 million in scholarships, with 65% of those Scholars as first-generation college goers. Individual awards vary. Application Deadline: 1/11/2024 11:59 PM. Learn more and apply here

From the Community

Good afternoon,

I hope you’re doing well! My name is Averie Brock and I am the Director of Registration for the Young Leaders Conference at the University of Florida. We are so excited to announce that our three-day conference will be February 2nd-4th 2024! We are reaching out to invite your students in grades 9-12 to apply for our annual Young Leaders Conference.

The Young Leaders Conference is a UF student-led event that guides students through a variety of workshops intended to enhance their leadership skills, while interacting with and experiencing the UF campus. Due to the large volume of registrants in the past few years we are transitioning to an application process. The Young Leaders Conference exists to educate and expand the minds of the leaders of tomorrow. In an effort to bring students who are truly passionate about developing their own leadership skills for the betterment of the world around them we are implementing an application.

Details regarding payment, price and a link to our application can be found on our website below:
